[Well yeah it's usually triggered by an irrelevant metaphor/question line or a straw man, which creates the need to go back to square one and get into semantics to eliminate those digressions.
Bad rhetoric leads to a need for clarification of the discussion, to summarize.
People have been primed/trained to engage in bad rhetoric b/c of lesser discussion avenues (like X, Reddit, Facebook comments, etc.) and they resist being taught what they consider proper is poor form. ]

Things derail into pissing matches and whatnot, but I rarely see things that are just completely not germane to the OP in any way, shape or form.
