Armed Guards at schools - what will it look like?

I vividly remember what my elementary school playground looked like... where the swings were and the sounds they made. Ditto for the slide and merry-go-round. Didn't realize at the time how idyllic this environment was. This is probably the most profound collateral damage of the "armed option" - the loss of innocence, replaced by people carrying lethal weapons. What will it look like? Will they keep their weapons in cheerfully decorated holsters and cases and only pulled when called for? Or will they be in plain sight? Imagine yourself as a 1st grader on the first day of the new school year and greeted by this scene.

This is what prolonged, unchallenged lunacy brings you. This is what happens in a world where virtue has fallen out of favor - where everything is right and nothing is wrong. This is what happens when some people take unfair advantage of the concepts of mutual respect and decency. It's low hanging fruit for those with sinister motives.

It'll look like it already does in most of Eastern and Western Europe.

Ever heard of Beslan: Three Days in September?

Narrated by Julia Roberts. It's worth a watch on YouTube.

Guns are only scary to children whose snowflake parents taught them to be scared of them. Did you not grow up pretending to shoot bad people? The concept of good and evil is not a difficult concept and kids aren’t going to be damaged by the reality that guns are necessary for protection.

Not buying it. When I went to school, never did the thought that I was a potential target ever enter my mind. Kids today (in armed schools) know at some level they have a bullseye on their backs.

The world is a dangerous place. Accepting that reality and knowing that there are people ready to protect you is not a bad concept to teach children. If you want your kids to be as ignorant as possible, that’s your choice. It sucks to have to prepare them for child predators, bullies, etc., but that’s life.

Good question. About 4 years ago I sat on the advisory board for my child's school. Around that time a school shooting occurred, probably Sandy Hook, but I honestly don't remember. I brought up being proactive about our school security and we took additional measures. Bullet proof coating for the glass on the main windows near access points, security gates and most importantly an armed sherriff's deputy with a sheriffs patrol car parked right in front of the school.

That's what it looks like.

I might add, that there have been a few incidents that have occurred and the response and communication with the parents has been exceptional.

ETA and it doesn't bother my kids one bit (girls). They all know the deputies and as far as they are concerned, he's just part of the staff.

Do we really want to have armed police at school?

Do you feel uncomfortable when you go to a high school athletic event and there are police there? Not really all that scary and crazy and Nazi like, like the media portrays it to be.

It’s fricking insanity that people want armed guards roaming elementary school campuses.

It's insane that we NEED to have armed security at our schools, but it's more insane to recognize a risk to your child and ignore it.

There are plenty of risks in life, we don’t have to go off the deep end because of them though.

What does it looks like having an armed air marshal on board a flight? When it’s done right, you don’t even notice it. No reason it needs to be any different on campuses. We aren’t talking about stationing a full squad of uniformed soldiers or anything.

Good luck attending a concert or sporting event without armed guards surrounding the perimeter and searching bags upon entry.

Yet it's never been an obstacle for adults and children to have fun inside.

Why should we pretend like it's different when they protect schools instead of music fans and sports fans?
