ExxonMobil has invested heavily there on facilities to extract lithium from deep brine water sources. They are targeting removing enough lithium annually to be the equivalent of supplying a million new EV’s.

Exxon, Chevron, and Equinor are heavily invested. Standard Lithium is the closest to coming online in about two years. Equinor has a 45% JV with them.

The lithium is located in the Smackover brine reservoir, the same one that companies like LANXESS and Albemarle have used for bromine production for decades. Bromine is extracted from the brine, and the water is then re-injected into the reservoir. Lithium producers plan to follow a similar process, using Direct Lithium Extraction to remove lithium from the brine before re-injecting the water back into the Smackover formation.
The lithium has always been there. The technology to extract it is new.

LG is a south korean company. While I am glad they are buying our lithium, could they also start paying us the 6 billion it cost to defend their border while they make their batteries safely and then sell them back to us for a mint.
