Any positive, direct results of protesting in the past 40 years?

*ETA: in America
i mean in response to something, like this #Ferguson stuff. the protests around Ferguson did nothing
and this isn't just about racial stuff. the #Occupy movement was one of the most absurd pieces of shite attempts at change in my life

it didn't start out that way, although it certainly turned into one.
as for your question: i think the vietnam protests did, over time, have an impact.

Were there actual protests against SOPA? I also remember Obama wanting to go into Syria and people being against that and him eventually backing down.

from day 1 i asked "what are they against? what are their plans?" and there was about 3000 different answers

Yeah, Occupy was pretty ridiculous/clueless.

Protests have been terrible recently because there really aren't any serious "crises". It's all insincere, and people join the protests to look cool and because they want to be like people from the 60s and 70s.
It's called 60s envy. It's all insincere and artificial.

not that i recall. same with the bailouts the first time. those were online movements without any physical corollary iirc

were their protests though? i think that was another just opinion-response more than an actual protest

but there is no point to get together in mass protest if you can't even create a message
otherwise you're just trying to make your insignificant opinion seem legitimate. i agree 100% with what another (much older) poster posted about protests today: they're just trying to seem cool and like they have something to say/change

the wisconsin protests got some recall elections going. it didn't really work like they wanted but had some effect.
btw, as an iowa fan I am rooting for LSU against wisconsin. there are very few teams i hate more than wisconsin. Just iowa state, ohio state and nebraska.

there was a general message. it was a left wing response to the bailouts and general social inequality. it's tough to get too specific when part of the identity is that there are no leaders.
It could have, and i think almost did, turn into a liberal tea party (which is something you've lamented the lack of several times).

there are some people like that. at the end of occupy you saw about 60% of the people were just there to "be seen". but that doesn't mean every protester is like that nor does it necessarily detract from a particular message. I'm sure it was no different back in the day.

this has been the case for the modern era.
woman get really horny at protests. you cannot capitalize on this unless you are also protesting.

the biggest difference was that "back in the day" there was something to actually protest about
