He didn't want more shite to control.
The rest of Ukraine didn't want to be Russian. The southeast region did.. Russia couldn't afford to take over all of Ukraine that didn't want to basically be occupied. It's too damn expensive. (See Afghanistan)
The southeast region wanted to be Russian. Tried to separate and had thousands killed for it over the last 7-8 years by Ukraine.
They would be easy to take over as they wanted to be Russian. Southeast part of the country also gave him access to a major gas thoroughfare.

I'm not in support of it, however, I'm also a realist who knows that our government wants nothing more than to see Russia fail in Ukraine. That means funding the Ukrainian war effort. Russia did the same thing against us in Korea and Vietnam while we did the same thing to them in Afghanistan. This has turned into a proxy war for NATO.

Exactly this! Excellent summation of what should be the obvious. If only we could get the same to explain the reasons behind Putin's "real motivations" for undertaking this endeavor. They had the SMO plan. I'm sure they war gamed possible escalation. I would think.
