I recommend the book "The Real Lincoln" for most of the people in this thread. Will really dispel a lot of the nonsense you were told about the man in school.

I read one book that I can't remember but Lincoln ordered the slaughter of native Americans in Minnesota. I don't remember the reason but that seems a bit barbaric for honest Abe.

This thread is a great example of the PT not being a good barometer of national beliefs.

Hamiltonian policies are garbage.
Hamilton created the first US bank. He and a few others had visions of a powerful nation in the US that could soon rival the power of the European kingdoms. Unfortunately he believed the only way to do so was through a strong, centralized government. Lincoln also believed in a strong centralized government.

In predicament in which both the government and the Commerce of this country are placed, through the non-enforcement of our Revenue laws, is now thoroughly understood the world over. If the manufacturer at Manchester can send his goods to the Western States through New Orleans at a less cost than through New York he is a fool for not availing himself of his advantage. If the importations of the country are made through southern ports, his exports will go through the same channel. The produce of the West instead of coming to our own ports by millions of tons to be transported abroad by the same ships through which we received our importations, will seek other routes and other outlets. With the loss of our foreign trading what is to become of our public works, conducted at the cost of many 100 millions of dollars to turn into our harbor the products of the interior? They share in the common ruin. So do our manufacturers once at New Orleans, goods may be distributed over the whole country duty-free. The process is perfectly simple. The commercial bearing of the question has acted upon the North. We now see clearly whither we are tending, and the policy we must adopt. With us it is no longer an abstract question- one of Constitutional construction or the reserve or delegated power of the state or Federal Government, but of material existence and moral position both at home and abroad.
Great job finding this article. There was no question as to what the issue was, and it wasn't slavery! Also, the North needed our sugar and cotton and didn't like having to depend upon the South and it's terms.
Reminds me of today, Biden constantly naming Trump supporters as a threat to democracy, lunatics, and white supremacist. Same dynamics are at play today, the Federal government wants control and middle class taxpayers are paying the price; politically, economically, and culturally.
Democrats are forcing a way of life on us that most do not want, more government, wokeness, open borders, and increased subsidizing of lazy people who refuse to work.

you cannot argue that the man had tremendous wisdom and was I believe appointed by God to bring this country through a very difficult and trying time in our history, so in that I believe his words have strong meaning, or should rather to the times in which we now find ourselves in this country.
true - this is the backbone of my respect for Lincoln.
I firmly believe that had he lived he would have executed that wisdom driven process in the reconstruction of the South. I do not think we would be in the dire circumstance we are today with his leadership during that era. All the important southern leadership were attuned to accepting the defeat and moving forward with positive attitude toward reconciliation.
Reconstruction was brutal on the south and was the impetus for exploiting the residual anti-black attitudes that destroyed generations of southern thought.

Good thing Lincoln was willing to do anything to keep this dumpster fire of a union together.

but the south really should have waited to fire upon Ft Sumter and let Lincoln have to muster troops for invasion without any excuse
Yeah, South Carolina hotheads gave him his excuse. I blame Spurrier.
