quote:

What constitutes the bulwark of our own liberty and independence? It is not our frowning battlements, our bristling sea coasts, the guns of our war steamers, or the strength of our gallant and disciplined army. These are not the reliance against the resumption of tyranny in our fair land. All of them may be turned against our liberties, without making us stronger or weaker for the struggle. Our reliance is in the love of liberty which God has planted in our bosoms. Our defense is the preservation of the spirit which prizes liberty as the heritage of all men, in all lands, every where.

September 11, 1858: From a Speech at Edwardsville, Illinois

quote:

How then shall we perform it?—At what point shall we expect the approach of danger? By what means shall we fortify against it?—Shall we expect some transatlantic military giant, to step the Ocean, and crush us at a blow? Never!—All the armies of Europe, Asia and Africa combined, with all the treasure of the earth (our own excepted) in their military chest; with a Buonaparte for a commander, could not by force, take a drink from the Ohio, or make a track on the Blue Ridge, in a trial of a thousand years.

At what point then is the approach of danger to be expected? I answer, if it ever reach us, it must spring up amongst us. It cannot come from abroad. If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen, we must live through all time, or die by suicide.

Speech to the Young Men’s Lyceum of Springfield (1838)

I will be the first to admit that Abraham Lincoln is a bit like a sweet and sour piece of candy to me in that he represents both good and bad to me when I sum up his life. On one side I could not agree more with his sentiments, especially in regard to liberty and freedom for all men, but on the other I find it difficult to reconcile that with his actions in the Civil War against people who simply espoused and acted upon their right to self government penned quite eloquently in our Declaration of Independence from Monarchy rule.

That being said, you cannot argue that the man had tremendous wisdom and was I believe appointed by God to bring this country through a very difficult and trying time in our history, so in that I believe his words have strong meaning, or should rather to the times in which we now find ourselves in this country.

I completely agree with all of you regarding Lincoln, but the words he uttered were correct in my opinion, which is where the problem comes for me with Lincoln himself. Words were on point, but his actions were pretty tyrannical, especially with Sherman’s war upon the civilian populations of the South. That’s a war crime no matter how you try and rationalize and excuse it.

Those words ring hollow. Lincoln was a tyrant piece of shite who hated wealthy land owners. He bent over backwards to pick a fight with the south.

I understand the need to establish yourself as sovereign, but the south really should have waited to fire upon Ft Sumter and let Lincoln have to muster troops for invasion without any excuse, and be seen as an egregious attack upon the right to self government which was the pretext to this country’s very existence. Without that act of aggression, there would be no excuse for invasion in the first place. The South simply gave him exactly what he wanted, and wasted precious time they could have used to build their infrastructure, manufacturing, and defenses. Too much zeal and not enough thoughtful preparation.

He wasn't alone. It was the Yankee culture of the North that feared losing their power and control to the South and the West. Here is an excerpt from the NY Times March 30th, 1861. They were afraid that New Orleans and the South would begin to control trading and rise to power to set the course of the country. And the Yankees weren't having none of that.

quote:

In predicament in which both the government and the Commerce of this country are placed, through the non-enforcement of our Revenue laws, is now thoroughly understood the world over. If the manufacturer at Manchester can send his goods to the Western States through New Orleans at a less cost than through New York he is a fool for not availing himself of his advantage. If the importations of the country are made through southern ports, his exports will go through the same channel. The produce of the West instead of coming to our own ports by millions of tons to be transported abroad by the same ships through which we received our importations, will seek other routes and other outlets. With the loss of our foreign trading what is to become of our public works, conducted at the cost of many 100 millions of dollars to turn into our harbor the products of the interior? They share in the common ruin. So do our manufacturers once at New Orleans, goods may be distributed over the whole country duty-free. The process is perfectly simple. The commercial bearing of the question has acted upon the North. We now see clearly whither we are tending, and the policy we must adopt. With us it is no longer an abstract question- one of Constitutional construction or the reserve or delegated power of the state or Federal Government, but of material existence and moral position both at home and abroad. We were divided and confused till our pockets were touched.

And over a half a million had to pay for their pockets with their lives, but clearly NOT them of course. That’s for the cannon fodder.

The south would never had the resources or means to able to defeat the north in such a short period of time.

Attacking wasn't smart but the south probably believed that in desperation the attack on Sumter would serve as a warning to Lincoln that the south would revert to war if he wasn't willing to listen.

I also believe if Sumter didn't happen then many places in the south would erupt in riots which would be serious enough for Lincoln to have either requested the governors of those states send in the national guard or he would order the troops himself.

That wouldn't go so well and I can see the governors refusing which would give Lincoln an excuse to invade the south.

Lincoln failed to ease tensions in the south and almost like it was intentional. 600,000 people died in that war which makes him one of the worst presidents.
