Technology is already in use. In Sacramento, they have a system in use that detects a shot fired. It can tell you what caliber. It can tell you exactly where it came from.

Now we have gear that will point a sniper out after detection and pinpoint you with a laser.

So how do you police this situation? Have these set up, if a shot is fired, the lasers will pinpoint the shooter immediately. Then a sniper can take them out.

Do you realize how many snipers you would need to cover a metro area?

Bad stuff happens man. We need to learn from it in realistic ways and hope the next attack is shortened.

Sounds awesome. I'll be happy to know that I'll be shot by a magic sniper if I shoot a criminal trying to stab me.

How does this not fall under government expansion and government control?

Once they know where he is it is probably quicker to send the swat team to the location as to get a sniper duel going in a metropolitan area.

Baton Rouge has had a gunshot detecting and locating system in the higher crime areas for several years.

Two problems prevent the technology from working as advertised: 1) Echoes off of buildings and trees distort the shots location, and, 2) the bad guys can see the sensors on the poles and they use them for target practice.

Keeping the sensors in working order has been a challenge....

They work ok, but in this case, they had the report that pinpointed at least one shooter in his exact room. given the muzzle flash and the room number, a sniper would have had just as much, if not more info that the boomerang can give him.

Problem 2: having sniper teams in the right place, and the right time, with the right equipment, training, and authority to do anything about it.

Exactly. Coalition used them extensively in Iraq, to little effect.

So the magic laser will be able to decide friend from foe. Gotcha.

I question whether or not most PDs can successfully implement and maintain these systems. I also question their ability to field the human talent required to capitalize on it.

you tell me. They had his room number and the muzzle flash from the room pinpointing his location to within, what, 10 meters? Does the LVPD have sniper teams? If so, then what stopped them from "sniping" him yesterday, and why would a boomerang system have changed the outcome?

Technology isn't the biggest piece of this puzzle. It's 90% about managing your people and having the tactical skills to capitalize on it.

No, but you are not defending yourself with an automatic weapon.

Come on... some common sense needed in this.

You stated it would not be able to tell if you were defending yourself from somebody trying to stab you.

Thats true... but you wouldnt be using an automatic weapon from the 32nd floor against an attacker in a crowd of 30k people...

Common sense.
