Yes he’s African. He’s likely Berber, with a Y-haplogroup subclade that is likely indigenous to North Africa. The region was ‘Arabized’ but there wasn’t wholescale displacement, as the Arabs themselves were a small group. This is true of North Africa west of Egypt, and Egypt itself.

Yeah i don't get the "outrage" or "surprise" over this. He's not the first Muslim to win Gold and probably not the first to win one in swimming. Why is this something to care about?
