51st state of Union, Douglass Commonwealth

house passes bill to make DC the 51st State.

House Democrats passed a bill Friday to make Washington, D.C., the 51st U.S. state, a historic move unlikely to gain traction in the Republican-held Senate.
The chamber approved it by a 232-180 vote.

The legislation would give Washington residents, who have long decried the fact that they pay federal taxes but have no voting representation in Congress, one House member and two senators. A smaller area encompassing the White House, U.S. Capitol, and other federal buildings and monuments would remain under U.S. oversight.
Washington's longtime nonvoting House delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton introduced the bill, which would change the name of the district to the state of Washington, Douglass Commonwealth. In advocating for the legislation Friday, she noted that D.C.'s population of about 700,000 is larger than that of Wyoming or Vermont, and that the district pays more federal taxes than 22 states.
"As we approach July 4th, it is long past time to apply the nation's oldest slogan, 'no taxation without representation,' and the principle of consent of the governed to District of Columbia residents," Norton said.
GOP senators have opposed D.C. statehood and look unlikely to take up the legislation. President Donald Trump has also criticized the legislation.
But if Democrats can win control of the White House and Senate in November, D.C. could get another shot at becoming a state next year.

people told me it would never happen and not worry about it earlier, good luck. Funny thing is my post was because I watched bongino earlier and thats why I posted. Still got destroyed because of MuH CiViCs told me I shouldn't be worried.

If the Dems take the Senate and WH in November this will be bumped a little down the list of overall concerns.

Sorry. Didn't see it posted earlier.

The article states that the population size is actually more than Wyoming and Vermont.
And they pay more taxes than 22 States.
That's state worthy to me.

No, you posted context, I just made a post asking and got told off. Again, I posted because bongino discussed it in his Friday video, I didn't mention that, and yet fellow goons told me I was retarded. Just reminding my fellow goons not to think because something shouldn't happen mean that it won't.

Okay. I understand.
It's not the worst thing in the world. I mean there are conventions in place to enter into statehood. It's not like they aren't paying taxes anyway. And 2 senators and 1 representative really isn't enough to 2/3 majority on anything.

Yes and no. You are correct that it isn't enough, but what Bongino pointed out is that DC and potentially Puerto Rico would always be democrat or left sided held. That isn't fair when that is the true intention here.

Don't we have more red states than Blue (outside of the swing states)?

frick that...let's just go ahead and divide the whole country into 68 square mile sections (the size of DC) and make them all states. I don't give a shite how many people are crammed into it...DC was not meant to be a state and shouldn't be.

The size of the state is irrelevant. Do you know that prior to the Civil War, many states were created as "balancing act" to keep free and slave states equal in represenation. :
The process of creating a new state is written in Article IV, Section 3 of the Constitution which reads,
"New States may be admitted by the Congress into this Union; but no new State shall be formed or erected within the Jurisdiction of any other State; nor any State be formed by the Junction of two or more States, or Parts of States, without the Consent of the Legislatures of the States concerned as well as of the Congress."
"The Congress shall have Power to dispose of and make all needful Rules and Regulations respecting the Territory or other Property belonging to the United States; and nothing in this Constitution shall be so construed as to Prejudice any Claims of the United States, or of any particular State."

If DC gains statehood then Jefferson should become a state as well.
State of Jefferson
State of Jefferson

If DC is that concerned about getting representation, then they should be absorbed by another state. This is simply the dems trying to stack the Senate.
Or split California or New York so the republicans there aren't always at the mercy of the idiots in the large cities.

It’s been proven unconstitutional and dems know it
It will take 38 out of 50 states to ratify the constitutional change required

I am okay with that.
I have no issue with new states being developed. It would go a long way toward creating more autonomous government away from federal government.
I know most of you want weaker federal government but that isn't going to happen. The best way we can adapt is to form more autonomous zones.

I agree. But it cuts both ways. What about all the Democrats who live in major Southern cities.
I think the taxation on DC needs to be revisited.

The founders never intended for DC to become what it has, and the only reason libs want to make it a state is because it’s 90% dem. It is a federal district and should not be a state
