On this day in 1998, Bill Clinton committed a major act of terrorism by ordering a cruise missile attack on Sudan’s Al Shifa factory, which produced 90% of the country’s pharmaceuticals. The factory's destruction resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands from treatable diseases

The US claimed the pharmaceutical faculty produced WMDs & was connected to Osama bin Laden, but neither was true. When it became clear the plant only produced medicine, the US blocked a UN inquiry into the incident. The US has never apologized or paid compensation for the attack.

In 1998, Sudan was heavily sanctioned & poor, thus it was unable to import replacement drugs to compensate for the destroyed Al Shifa plant, which provided vital medicines at an inexpensive price. In Sudan, the incident is widely described as an act of terror.

The plant had specialized in anti-malaria, tuberculosis treatments & veterinary medicines. An report by a former German ambassador to Sudan stated that “several tens of thousands” were likely killed due to preventable diseases following the attack.

According to reports in the NY Times, former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright & one of her senior deputies killed a State Dept report being drafted that said the bombing was not justified.

WH officials admitted that the major impetus for carrying out the attack was to make Clinton look like a strong and effective executive a week after the Lewinsky story broke.

That isn't how burden of proof works. You can't just ask people who weren't there or who had no intimate knowledge of intelligence briefings

You must be young if you don't remember it.

DO your own research, idiot.

Nothing I posted was wrong. Sorry it criticizes your god, Mr. Bill Clinton.

You people are the same ones who want Bush tried for war crimes.

Why not be consistent in your outrage towards bad foreign decisions by our nation.

I'll help you out, hack .
NYT

quote:

"officials later said that there was no proof that the plant had been manufacturing or storing nerve gas, as initially suspected by the Americans, or had been linked to Osama bin Laden, who was a resident of Khartoum in the 1980s."

quote:

The attack took place a week after the Monica Lewinsky scandal and two months after the film Wag the dog, prompting some commentators to describe the attack as a distraction for the public from the scandal

Calm down, Sally. That's not how any of this works. You don't get to just accuse a former president of a terrorist act and not have any information whatsoever. Absolutely ludicrous that you're telling me that I need to look up something from a conversation that you started with zero substance.

I don't remember ever saying that but to be honest with you I think they should all be strung up and shot for killing hundreds of thousands of people for no good reason.

Honestly I don't like the way you handled the Ruby Ridge situation or the Branch Davidian compound. But in this specific for instance instead of telling me what I should or shouldn't be mad about why don't you show me why with any useful information.

You aren't going to get anyone to join your argument and understand your point of view if you don't have any information whatsoever and then start insulting people when they don't understand where you're getting this crap from.

I'll admit it does look pretty sketchy. Why didn't you just lead with that link, instead of acting like an unprepared jackass?

Apparently not. I'm sure that's something a person who has traditionally voted Republican would have been paying attention to a lot more carefully.

It was huge news when it happened dude. And it very quickly came out that there were no chemical weapons in the facility. It’s not like it was some obscure thing. If you followed the news at all in the late 90’s you would have heard about it. Maybe that was before you’re time, and if so that’s fine, but’s not some obscure little known event that was only reported by right wing outlets.

Tens of thousands didn't die. Britain refused to aid Sudan. Statists are gonna statists. Clinton was no different than any other POTUS. They all should be locked up.

quote:

Leo Casey disputed the 50% figure supplied by the Sudanese government, which "has every reason to inflate these numbers", and criticized the assumption that any deaths had to result from even a 50% loss, as Al-Shifa "was only one of six pharmaceutical factories in [Sudan's] capital city of Khartoum" and Sudan could have imported any replacement medicines it needed with the "greatly increased revenues from oil fields in the southern part of the country". Casey concluded: "Whether the government chose to import the medicine is an open question, awaiting evidence not yet in the public realm, and even if it had, such action would not absolve the U.S. government of responsibility for compensation, should it be unable to prove its case that the factory was being used for the production of chemical weapons. But the fact that the Sudanese government could easily have done so is unquestionable."[18]
