LEWISTON, Maine (WGME) -- Police say an 18-year-old shot two people in the face with what appears to be a high-powered pellet gun in Lewiston, causing serious injuries.

Police responded to the area of Oak Street and Holland Street on Wednesday around 11 p.m. following a report of a man who had been shot in the face.

When officers arrived, they found a 60-year-old man suffering from an apparent facial injury.

The victim told police that he had been walking when an SUV pulled alongside him. Several people inside the vehicle then began yelling at him.

According to police, a passenger, later identified as 18-year-old Ahmed Yussuf of Lewiston, pointed what appeared to be a gun at the victim and shot him in the face.

The SUV then fled the area.

About 10 minutes later, police got a report that a 34-year-old woman had been shot in the face near Walnut Street and Bartlett Street.

Both victims were taken to Central Maine Medical Center and later transferred to Maine Medical Center in Portland.

The victims are expected to undergo surgery to remove the projectiles from their face and neck. Police say the man is listed in stable, non-life-threatening condition, while the woman remains in serious condition.

Following an investigation, police say they determined Yussuf was the alleged shooter.

Police believe the weapon used was a high-powered pellet gun. However, the type of projectile will not be confirmed until it is surgically removed from both victims and examined.

Yussuf has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault and two counts of reckless conduct. He is currently being held at the Androscoggin County Jail on $100,000 cash bail.
