Anyone tried it? What is the deal here. I've never been surf fishing or anything like that in the Gulf. What kind of lures/baits are people using out there?

Cut bait, shrimp, squid.

Be ready for a frick load of people to be 2 feet away from you with 7 rods out per person. You have been warned.

I caught one of the biggest trout in my life there by the bridge and rocks on live shrimp. I caught one and had 20% of my limit, and people in FL think fishing is better there

My nephew lives in that area...works in Destin. About every day after work, he fishes with nothing but a top water lure and catches some nice trout. With that said, by "some" I mean one or two daily. Tomorrow, he's headed over here to get enough to fill his freezer.

I caught a 125 lb tarpon on a flyrod about 200 yards downs stream from the pier about a week before Ivan.

That pier at times has some out standing fishing.....

tarpon use the second "trough" pretty regularly in july and august.

google a trolly rig if you wanna catch kings.

actually we hammered the fish in the sound on same stuff we use here for specks and reds...

Nephew caught a 24" trout on Monday. That said, he isn't fishing at the pier. He's fishing somewhere around Destin. Still, same fishery. He gets REAL excited if he catches 5 keepers in a day of fishing.

If someone told you that and it hurt your feelings, I'm sorry. But I didn't tell you that.

BTW, quite possibly the only state with worse roads/interstates than LA is AL. Y'alls interstate system SUCKS. Friggin 59/20 is CLOSED just outside Birmingham. It was fun pulling my camper behind a 4 door long bed dually thru beautiful downtown Birminghood yesterday.

I followed the detour signs. Wish I had known about it sooner...I would have gone around it. It was crazy...me and a bunch of tractor trailers manuevering thru the hood in BTown.
