Inherited a gun from my Grandfather

Small story to tell.. some may appreciate this...
Went visit my grandfather (88 year old WWII vet)this past Sunday and over the years he has given me a few guns but i always loved a certain Browning A-5 16 gauge he had. I am sitting at the table and he tells me, "Hey you need to bring that 16 gauge home". Not knowing what hes talking about i respond something like, i don't have your 16 gauge. He said, " I know, its in my closet and i want you to have it and take it home." I am one of many grandchildren mostly boys, and he has 2 sons left. This was one of his last guns that he still has. My dad was another son, but passed away last year. He went on to tell me he bought this gun at some small town when he stepped off the bus from the war in '45 because he knew he needed something to provide food for his family. He handed it to me and said, "take this, your lil boy will want to shoot this one day".

Write into Hallmark. You could probably get a movie made out of this. Great story though and I would keep that Browning close. That will be something you are gonna want to pass onto your own kid one day. Keep it going down the line.

Thats great man. I have a story very similar to yours. Right down to the guage and gun. Search Browning.com for a page that you can date the gun and find out other information about it.

Great story! I also inherited several guns from my grandfather when he passed . Several include:
1. Model 12 Winchester 12GA
2. 1879 Springfield
3. 444 lever action from great grandpa
4. Browning A bolt 270 he never shot that was a retirement gift from his company
5. Prized one: Colt 45 1911 Military Edition that was passed down from WW I.

Very nice. I inherited two 16 gauge Parkers from my uncle back in 2005. Best guns I have ever shot. In his honor they are the only guns I hunt turkeys with. He was my godfather and a former Chairman of the NWTF and its first Gold Sponsor.

Good story. I can remember the Christmas my uncle (my mother's only brother) came in the door with a Marlin Model 60 .22...it was my mother's father's rifle. He walked across and said, "Here this was PawPaw's...it's yours now." I remember looking at my dad, because up until that point, I'd never had a gun of my own....Dad said, "You better take it."
I still have it 20 some odd years later..and it still fires true. Damn fine squirrel gun too.

My Grandfather had a Winchester model 12 in 12 gauge.
He gave it to my father to hunt with when he was a kid.
My father gave it to me and we hunted many times together.
I have given it to my son. He's not much of a hunter, but you could not pry it out of his hands if you tried!! It goes to his kid when the time is right.
Guns were a valuable asset around the home in years gone by. Handing down these heirlooms is a great tradition that thankfully survives today.

I have my dad's Model 12 great gun. But better memories of him shooting the hell out of ducks with it when I was a wee lad.
We have a pretty big gun collection between the two of us and an uncle which will all end up with me (only male). I told dad that of everything we have that model 12 held to most meaning.
Funny how certain guns can mean so much - they are nothing more than wood and steel.

Thanks for the replies... It sort of hit me when he handed it to me exactly what he was doing. Like i had said, he has given me a couple other guns that he had bought used along the years, but this one was his that he purchased new and kept all these years and basically the last one he still was holding on to. I think he said he paid $113 for it, which was a good chunk of change back then. It also amazes me how for all his life, he never ever spoke about the war, and now he opens up and tells a story or two...
