The 770 is a totally different rifle and nowhere near the 700 in quality. It will likely do what you want it to do (kill deer) but it isn't the rifle the 700 is.

Also, stocks are MUCH easier to find for the 700. Once they outgrow the youth stock, it will take almost no effort to get a full sized stock put on the rifle. Then they can keep the short stock for their kids in the future. That cannot be said about the 770.

There are tons of great options out there, but I cannot be convinced that there is something better out there than a youth 700 in 7mm-08 for a kid 5 years and older.

Get whichever one you like better. They are both great rifles and you will definitely be happy with either one. Just make sure it has a short enough stock for them to handle properly.

Have fun watching the kids smoke deer. Kids can usually shoot better than the man that brings em

Either one you get will be superb. I have a Savage and Rem. DO NOT get the Savage Edge or Axis whatever they're calling it now.

Got a Rossi rifle/shotgun (interchangeable barrels) for my son 12 years ago.

Rifle was a POS. Terrible group, lousy sights.

With the .410 shotgun barrel, it was quite nice. Liked the revolver-style transfer bar safety. We still use it as a shotgun.

Get the Rem. Model Seven if they still make it.

I got one of these 25 years ago (when I was 9) and slated many deer with it. I let 3 of my nephews use it through the years. Little Josey will be 7 in October and will start slinging lead with it this year. It has been a great little rifle.

ETA: if I had to buy a new one, I would strongly compare the .243 to the 7mm-08.

Have Remington and ruger both are fine. Everyone on here will tell to to buy 2000k guns and 1000 scopes etc. becuase we are all millionaires and can buy the best of everything. Lol yes they are better and so it my Rolex over my seiko watch but they both keep great time and one is 7000 cheaper.

It is a kids gun they will use for 3 to 5 years max. Hell go to academy and let him pick it out. Better to spend more on scope as you can flip that to his next gun.

Bought the Rossi combo for my kids... 22/243/410

Overall I have zero gun/function issues daughter killed her fight buck with this gun. With that said it is pretty cheaply made and the plastic on the gun makes it light weight. I wish I would have spent the money on a real youth rifle with a nice wood stock. I think the 243 kicks as hard as my Remington 700 in .270.

Are you set on the caliber as well?

IMO, the ultimate kids rifle is a remington 700 with a youth stock in 7mm-08. Full sized stocks are a dime a dozen for when the kid outgrows the stock. They'll never outgrow the caliber.

good advice...excellent rifle...

you can always up the caliber to .270 instead of .243 and just buy him the Remington "managed recoil" ammunition.

My son can shoot all day with those and he'll never flinch when pulling the trigger.

Short little crack barrels are notoriously abusive on the back end. They just aren't heavy enough.

I am in the same boat as you.My son is 8 this year and wants to hunt bad with me.My dad left me his Model 700 .270.It had the wood stock and has a scope already on it.I bought a Model 700 youth synthetic stock on Ebay for $35 and some Hornady Custom Lite ammo.I would like to put a Limsaver pad on it as well.take a look on Ebay for a youth stock if you go the 700 route.

I have a HR handi rifle in .243. Figured the kids could use it then get a primitive barrel for it later. Shoots good.

Cannot say enough good about these things.

I highly suggest putting them on everything everybody owns that has any amount of recoil at all. They do wonders.

I bought my kids a browning x-bolt micro hunter to share. It fits them perfect (9 and 11years old). It is a little more expensive but finding a good fitting rifle for them to get comfortable with and enjoy shooting was most important. I also love shooting It. Caliber is another discussion. Depends on the size of your child and how they react to recoil and report of the rifle.
