Thing is, there's frickwits out there that will buy it just because it's a Yeti product.
Never mind the fact it's no better than one that costs about 10% of what that one goes for.

Not true. It seems to be that it's just a rebranded Butter Pat Industries skillet, which is already a premium product. There are multiple manufacturers making high end cast iron. All of them are much higher quality than one that's 10% the cost.

I can cook just as easily, and get great results using my Lodge or the off brand stuff I have in my kitchen. The real trick is to have them properly seasoned for best results.
My point being, if you have 2 pans of equal size and weight in cast iron and both are properly seasoned, the $25 pan will cook just as well as the $100 pan.

Is it Bear Proof???? I am looking for a skillet that is Bear Proof like my cooler....
I bought a boat in the Carribean from an old boy in 2013 and it had a Yeti on it. After making the deal I asked "you gonna throw that cooler in with the boat"...I had never heard of a Yeti at the time, frankly because I ain't stupid enough to be in the market for a $500 cooler. He told me he'd sell it to me for $300. I told him I wouldn't pay $300 for a boat load of coolers. He got a little hurt and said "It's bear proof"! I told him it was doing a helluva job, hadn't been a bear in that neck of the woods for as long as anyone could remember....
I have told anyone who would be in a condition to intervene if I ever started to buy or was seen with a Yeti I had bought to rush me to the nearest medical professional 'cause I had been hit in the head or had some sort of episode...I have lived 58 years, spent an inordinate amount of time drinking things out of coolers, slinging dead things in coolers and I ain't ever needed a cooler that would keep a bear out or one that cost more than $100...If I did have one I sure as hell wouldn't tie it up on my trucks tool box where I couldn't get in it but everyone could see it...but each to his own and all. I just ain't overly concerned with bear attacks...

I give them full credit for being essentially the first with rugged coolers, overpriced or not. Same with stainless tumblers.
They weren’t the first.
Damn sure weren't....fish boxes on commercial boats built out of 3/4 inch plywood sandwiching styrofoam and put together with screws or nails and construction adhesive predate them by at least 50 years....and can take waaaaayyyyyyyyyy more abuse. They ain't bear proof though and Yeti has flat run the bears out of about 95% of their market....

My wife bought me one of the Tumblers and it'll keep ice for days...the trouble is it won't keep Scotch...it has a damned hole in it and every time I tip it up the damned Scotch runs down my throat and eventually dissapears. Ice is cheap but Scotch, not so much...I would pay $400 for a tumbler that never ran out of Scotch....

My wife got me the big tumbler about a decade ago, has been my water cup. Would have never paid what she did though. Blood place just sent me another one so now I can rotate. I've only ever put water in it, but 25 oz of scotch... You have me thinking about it.

It don't drain out quick....takes about 3 hours usually unless I am thirsty....

What makes them higher quality? I've got older pans with a milled bottom as opposed to the sand cast finish that is the norm these days. After noticing the difference I took an orbital sander to most of my other ones. Cast iron is cast iron.

Bingo-----Anyone who pays that much for a cast iron pan has way more money than sense.

Older cast iron is better than most of the stuff they are putting out today.
Butter Pat and others come with a great finish inside and out that you're not going to get from a basic lodge. It costs money to get a slick finish. You said so yourself, you had to take a sander to yours. Not to mention the higher end stuff is thinner and lighter than a wal mart lodge.
New cheap stuff is fine for frying fish or searing steaks, but expensive stuff is almost non stick and doesn't require sanding to get there.
Like anything else, cheap shite will get the job done. But if you appreciate something a little nicer, it costs a whole lot more.
Not sure why people are hating on YETI, they didn't bring this product to market. It's literally a licensing deal on an already very expensive skillet that has been around for years.
I have certain things in the kitchen that are very nice and very expensive, skillet is one of them. It gets used at least 10x a week. With something that gets used every day, who cares if it's more up front. I might have these things for a lifetime.
If a YETI skillet gets the board all worked up, I cant wait until they license the Pepper Cannon. :lol

I had to sand a $20 lodge, not my older stuff. I don’t consider thinner and lighter a plus for cast iron; I like the thermal stability the mass offers.
I spend stupid money on some things, so I get it. I personally have hard time justifying $400 vs a $20 cast iron skillet that I spent 30 minutes on with a sander, but people say that about my fishing gear.

I thought it was a joke too. I’m stunned.

THIS. I gladly dropped $1800 for a Garmin chart plotter with side scan for a 16 FT poling skiff that, 99% of the time I run in less than 2 FT of water that I know like the back of my hand. That does not remotely approach the absurdity of a $400 cast iron skillet.

Not an expert but a old cast iron will do just fine
I have my Mama's and my Granny's cast iron skillets...one is probably 60 years old and the other is probably 90 years old. Neither one of them has ever been washed with detergent that I am aware of...and cornbread will pop out of either without any sign it was used. They are kept in the oven and only come out after pre-heating or when they are going to used. Nothing has ever stuck to either one of them. I would posit that those 2 old women knew as much about cooking with cast iron skillets as it is possible to know...they didn't need a $400 skillet to cook a steak

It really doesn't. Do a good job of seasoning and take care of the finish and it will get better as the years go by. I bought a dutch oven bottom from a garage sale that had heavy rust and crud build up. Took a chance because it was $3. Well after removing rust and crud the cooking surface is heavily pitted. No matter, seasoned it up and i use it anyway. Works fine. It is going to me my camping dutch oven.

Lighter is not an asset unless you have a hard time with heaver pans. Heavy pans are more forgiving the thin pans. Some people still throw pans into a camp fire to clean them, hell i used to do the same before I knew better. Luckily I was doing it with Lodge and BSR that are heavy and they did not warp. Do that with a thin designer pan and you are likely to have a $400 spinner. Same with using the self cleaning cycle of an oven. Just say no.
