FWIW, I agree it's a good motor. I just hate heavy slow 4 strokes...and grey motors.

Oh I am...but that is a dependable motor. I'm also a 4 stroke hater. I love how people get all excited about it being "quiet". Outboard motors aren't supposed to be quiet! Who gives a frick if an outboard motor is quiet?? And the mileage? I know for a fact my black 2 stroke 150 gets better mileage than a 4 stroke Yamaha 150. In 6 years, I have yet to have one single issue with my black 2 stroke 150...never failed to crank immediately and runs like a beast. Put a Yamaha 150 4 stroke on the exact same boat and I'll see you when YOU get there...I'll already be there...with more fuel in my tank.

Pretty much everyone not in a bass boat. A motorbike or glasspacks on a truck aren't "supposed to be quiet" but that doesn't make it any less annoying.

Yea I seriously doubt this. Maybe on different boats.

You getting there first, I buy that all day long. With more gas left in tank? Not sold on that. Worked for Yamaha & Merc dealer for 4+ years, wouldn't go with the black motor for anything. Currently running the Yammy F150 (inline 4 cyl, so very efficient) on a 21 Nautic Star, big fan. Tops out at 53 so I'm happy with the speed.

All that said, old boss from previous job referenced above now is at a local Merc dealer and has great things to say about the new Merc 150 4-Stroke. I know it's about 20lbs lighter than the Yamaha and wouldn't shock me if it's faster BUT will it last??

Link is guys leaving Rigolets in a 1900 Nautic Star with a 150 4 stroke Yami having to stop and fill up running the same route as me in a 1900 Nautic Star with a 150 Optimax. I assume the ran the same route, I dunno. That was the plan...but I lost sight of them pretty quick.

Don't you know any topic like this is gonna piss people off if anyone has a different opinion. Both are good motors. Mercs suffered in rep a while back, but just like Yami had it's issues with the VMax, both have been addressed. Like I said...2006 Opti 150, never a single problem with it...not one single issue. Cranks immediately every time the key is turned, and runs like a scolded dog.

Why do you think in the old Etec infomercials they never put it head to head against an Opti? Always was against a 4 stroke Verado. The reason is because the Opti would've smoked it AND gotten better mileage.

I've had the F150 on my boat for 4 years now with out one single problem, except some bad gas issue.

Very dependable motor, yes it quiet, and yes I want my motor to be quiet!

I agree 4 strokes are a little slower and heavier than 2 strokes but fuel burn depends on how owner operates. At WOT 4 stroke and 2 stoke both burn alot of fuel. AT cruise speeds is where the 4 stroke really sets itself apart.

Annoying?? How so? I left BSM yesterday and spent the day in Black Bay, and several bays between there and BSM. I seriously doubt the noise from the Optimax annoyed anyone. I don't run the boat in a neighborhood. And for what it's worth, the loudest outboard I heard at the launch was a 130 Yamaha. Granted it was old as shite...but still...thing sounded like it was about to come apart, and looked like it to with all the vibration. It didn't annoy me, though.

May be. I honestly wouldn't know. I don't understand the concept of cruise speed, but all I do is fish out of a boat. I don't usually cruise around. I suppose if it's just a cruise around with friends boat, that's something important to consider.

Seriously Clark?!? Your one of those who keep the hammer down at all times?

Well...
WOT (wide open throttle) 5500-6000 RPM depending on motor

cruise - usually anywhere between 3500-4500 RPM - where all outboards are designed to run.

Constantly running at WOT will shorten the life of your motor.

You haven't made a valid point against the motor yet. I don't care about brand names, but a 4 stroke is a more efficient motor, and it's quiet. I don't see how you can argue either of those facts as a negative. The only negatives for a 4 stroke compared to 2 stroke is holeshot and weight.

And the new Yammy 200 SHO is lighter than my F150! I want one sooooooo bad!

Holeshot on mine is outstanding, but I run a 4 blade prop.

Exactly, 4 strokes are getting lighter. If buying a new boat I'd have a 2 stroke on a fast bass boat hull, for getting places quick. Anything else, 4 stroke. If the 48 Johnson ever dies a 60hp 4 stroke is going on there.
