Has anyone been to this event? Seems to be a decent sized event. Wanted to see if it would be worth taking 8yr old son to since it would be a 6hr haul for us.

Man, I've been wanting to make it a family guys trip for the last few years. Bunch of stick in the mud inlaws though,,, Seems like a fun weekend.
ETA: take the road trip with your boy. It will be great no matter what the event is like. My son calls our road trips "redneck roadkill roadtrips" Pretty descriptive actually.

You’d be better off going to the squirrel cook off at Willie’s Campground in Washington, LA

Squirrel Cook Off? If it ain't in Evangeline Parish it is a copy cat. Evangeline Parish is the meca of squirrel hunting. End of Story

A little early for this? Does squirrel season open further north earlier?

Looks like in Northwest Arkansas the season is open from May 15- February 28th. Limit is also 12.

I have decided to just go and check it out. Everyone is right, it will be a fun road trip either way. From what I have been reading it seems like a pretty big event. ACC crappie stix are giving away a bunch of fishing rods and gear to the kids for free. I just want a hat from them since I have 8 of their rods and all I have is a sticker to show for it.

Can't wait for your report.
A YouTube video about it popped up in my feed, and it was the first I'd heard of it. I was amazed at all the fantastic looking dishes folks made from squirrel.

I was thinking of bringing my 22 and hunting them while I'm up there deer hunting. Ive seen some boone and Crockett sized fox squirrels up there

The cook off was a good time. It is a lot more crowded than I was expecting. Everything you did involved a line with a 10-20 minute wait. The 27 teams cooking didn’t have enough samples to go around, so we didn’t even get to sample a squirrel dish. We managed to get a sample of crow meat that I would compare to dove with a slightly more gamey flavor. Glad we went, but probably won’t go again. My little boy had fun and we made a weekend out of it going to Bentonville and then going on a cave tour at War Eagle Caverns. He said it was an 18/10 weekend so that is a win in my book. North West Arkansas is truly a utopia.

That’s what it’s all about! Road trips with the boys are the best.

Do they have a "Squirrel Bowl" like Buckeye High School does. If not, fake.
