Monday’s hunt took a toll on the dogs, they are in healing mode. We most likely will not hunt again till the weekend.

I called that number the other night; we couldn't make last weekend work, but might be able to make something happen this weekend.

Shooting time ends at sunset for woodcock. Those birds are flying after sunset.

Migration
Woodcock migrate back and forth between northern breeding areas and southern wintering grounds. In spring and summer, they breed in the North, from Atlantic Canada west to the Great Lakes area. In autumn they fly to lowlands from the Carolinas west to eastern Texas, with the greatest concentration of birds wintering in Louisiana and Mississippi. Woodcock migrate north again in February, March, and April, homing to the same areas where they were hatched.

Same here.

That and whip-poor-wills. Haven't heard one of those since about 1979. They must be extinct.

I still hear whippoorwills in CENLA, but never hear them around Folsom like I did when I was a kid. Again, it's due to forestry/land use practices and predators. We can burn in CENLA, but cannot in St. Tammany.

Not sure on those, but I have heard Chuck-will's-widow calls all my life and some recently. Their range includes a lot of La. whereas whip-poor-wills really aren't common and don't appear on either the La BBS or CBC maps.

You're correct, but most folks just generically use the term whippoorwill. They are both nightjars with funny calls.
