Does not look right for a woodcock....

Head shape and beak are wrong legs too long

Well I missed the rest of the discussion. So its a rail. I googled it. Thats the bird I saw. The water from the Pascagoula river is high and came up into the yard of the house I'm renting for work. It was walking the edge of the water in the grass probing for food. That meets the description of the rail. I'm not a coast guy so I'd never seen one before. Very dumb bird. I could have caught it with a net.

In related news, I saw one of the few woodcock I've ever seen the other day. I grew up in the "mountains" of north alabama. From what I understand they tend to live in bottomlands. Anyway, I live in the tennessee river valley now. I was hawking the other day and nearly stepped on one. It helicoptered straight up through the trees and took off with my hawk right behind it. It would have been a miraculous catch for a red tail and I would have bragged to my falconry friends for years.
