So my dad passed down my late grandfathers Winchester 94 30-30 to me. The gun is in good working shape but was heavily used. No damage to the stock other than scratches. It was my grandfathers truck gun. He took many deer with it. I'm in the woods quite a bit an always carry my AR. I find it an honor to take be able to take my grandfathers gun into the woods and use it in the way he did. So I'll be swapping it out for my AR quite a bit. Maybe even use it to take a few deer when I'm hunting close range. The sights on it are horrible. He did have a scope on it but it's gone with the mount. So I'm trying to decide to change he iron sights, put a scope or a red dot. Wondering what the OB thinks? What's also awesome is me and my wife are pregnant with our first child. I hope it's a boy so I can pass down this gun as well as others to the next generation.

I'd just leave the old iron sights on there unless they are beat to hell and not useable anymore. You have to side mount scopes on the 94's due to the ejection trajectory of the shell casing. Just some food for thought.

The iron sights are in good shape. I've looked around and it seems they have some much better sights for sale than the one it has. I haven't had a chance to shoot it yet so I'm going to see how the old sights perform.

If it was made prior to 1964 make it as original as possible with factory iron sights. If it is post 64, put a scope or do whatever floats your boat. You can check year model by serial number.

Don't change the sights man, Your Grandaddy didn't need new sights.....heck half the time he probably didn't even use the rear.

Shoot it some, hunt with it, but don't change it.

my opinion. A red dot on a 94 is sacrilegious.

Appreciate the advice. Looks unanimous to go iron sights. The red dot was just a thought. Had almost no chance of happening . I haven't used iron sights since I was a kid with a pellet gun. Think I'll just get use to them and keep the rifle original.

Go with a Williams or Lyman peep sight. I put a Skinner on my Marlin (side eject), and usually just use the ghost ring with no aperture. WAY better than the original semi-buckhorn.

Williams

Lyman
