Why? Duck/Deer question.

Why is there 9, or maybe more areas for deer, and only 2 zones for ducks? And who sets these areas/zones? I know its the wildlife and fisheries. But who in this department actually sets these areas? Would like to see a change in the duck zones/splits.

i'm sure that the zones for deer have a little to do with the rut. but, that's just a guess.

That and there are a lot of local politics involved with the deer zones. Since ducks are migratory and fall under federal jurisdiction, there is less chance of Senator Good-ol'boy from tampering.

Don't know about deer but Duck seasons and zones are determined by fed gov. Adjusted every 10 years. State makes several proposals and fed selects the one they want. This year was the end of current cycle and things will change next year.

Funny, I was just told today they are set by the state every five years and the next cycle is next year... Not arguing at all. Just noting difference

Don't know about the deer stuff, and really could care less, don't hunt deer. But this duck split crap sucks. I really don't understand why there are splits. The only thing is to let the ducks settle so you can go out and blast em again. I would prefer to let it run straight thru. Nov 1 - Dec 30 would be alright by me. Our first split we averaged over 6 ducks a hunt. The second, around .86 a hunt.

I don't think the split has anything to do with it, our place is pretty much a split between wknds anyway. I think most people below alec had a below average second split. Last year was better.
My average wasn't quite as low as yours, but it was bad. I scratched 2-3 times and it's been a while before that.
We do have larger "fresh birds" showing up closing wknd, this and the last two seasons which supports the argument of another split and/or moving the season dates back.

I hunt NELA, North Texas, and SE Arkansas and because of the amount of mallards we shoot we need the later days in the second split. Last day of North Texas season we shot all mallard limits with just enough off birds, and this happened for a few weeks. Pretty much the same deal in NELA. I think the zones need to be North/South oriented. This would allow people in the marsh to shoot little brown ducks during the early season when they want more days and allow the northern hunters maximum days in December and January when the mallards are finally here in numbers. My buddy has a place in the marsh in SWLA and they burn the ducks up every year until early January when it often slows down for them. Things in north Louisiana tend to be exactly the opposite in my experiences.

In NELA, our second split is always much, much better.

We have 3 blinds in gueydan, LA and 1 in lyons point. The 2nd split has been hit or miss. we had 2-3 hunts where we hit our limit in 1-2 hours and then some hunts we went morning/evening and wouldnt come close. First split we came close to/if not hit our limit almost every hunt.

Zones and Splits are set every 5 years, and are set by options given to the state by USFWS. If you want to comment on the options that are available to LA for the upcoming 5 years, here's your chance! Please keep you comments limited to the options that are avialble to us. What you think about "other" options really doesn't matter at this point.

I would like your opinion on zones and splits.
As you probably know, we set zones and splits every 5 years. Whatever we choose, we are stuck with for that time.
In the past, the USFWS has allowed us to choose between 1) 3 zones with straight seasons, 2) 2 zones with split seasons, or 3) a statewide season (no zones) with 2 splits (3 season segements). This year, it looks like the USFWS will offer: 1) 4 zones with straight seasons, 2) 3 zones with split seasons, or 3) a statewide season (no zones) with 2 splits (3 season segments).
Of course, we can choose anything more conservative …… like 2 zones with split seasons (our current structure) or 3 zones with straight seasons or a statewide season with 1 split.
One option that was NOT approved was 2 zones with 2 splits (3 season segments). That is NOT an option.
It is my opinion that we are using zones and splits about as effectively as we can with the current 2 zones with split seasons while still allowing us adequate flexibility should the regulations be restricted to 45 or even 30 day seasons. But I would like to hear the opinions of other hunters in addition to the feedback I already have from the 2005 and 2010 hunter-opinion surveys.
I'd also appreciate your passing this request around to anyone that might want to comment.

Flyways and Rut zones.
Easy enough.

duck zones used to be based on the thought that parts of state were in central and ms flyways...and had slightly different migrations.. this may no longer be true..
xenon is right.. but state MUST use fed framework.
deer.. 50% biology 50% politics... bucks still working scrapes in feb... should still be hunted in feb....
