Ok so the wife gets me the "dream hunt" of my choice for my 40th birthday. Say's she would prefer I stay in the 4-6 thousand dollar range. The 3 places she checked out were Giles Island in MS., and Rattlesnake Springs and the Eight Point Ranch in Texas. Said I was welcometo check some other places as well.

So my question is...... anyone have experience at any of these places or somewhere else like them. I know for the money I'm not going to kill a world record. I'm hoping for a 140-160 class deer since I hunt in a region where there aren't many of those kind of bucks walking around. What say ye OB?

Oh and I know that some of these places may be high fence but I just don't want to do the "shoot a deer in a pen" thing.

Ideas and/or input?????

I'm of no help here.

But on the wife. That's a hell of a gift.

yeah.... she's pretty awesome!

I was hoping to find an opening for January.... but it's not looking good. Giles is booked solid. Have calls in to the places in Texas.
I'm kinda thinking I may just wait 'til next season and go ahead and book Giles. But then again, you can shoot so much extra stuff in Texas.... tough decision.

I second above ^. I would personally like to go to Canada or the midwest.

That being said, a friend of mine is a guide at Giles and they run a bangup operation up there. Really great deer and good people running the show. From those choices, I would go with Giles.

1. Giles Island - it's one of the best whitetail places in the US and it's just right there

2. somewhere in the midwest - just giants everywhere! look into Illinois, Missouri, Iown, etc

3. Canada - 300lb bucks

I hear that a poster on here has a high fenced place down in S. Texas. His name is slipping my mind for some reason. I think it's BudMan or something

This. I'll rec Giles too. Book the best timed weekend you could imagine next year now and you'll have a great time.
Be treated like a king too as far as accommodations and food too.

Here's my experience.

Me and 3 buddies went to Illinois 3 weeks ago on private land (no big outfitter) and an engineer I work with went to Giles island the same time we went to Illinois.

All 3 of us tagged out on buck 135" or bigger. On the Giles island trip they didnt kill a single deer out of 5 people.

I'm not saying Giles island sucks, but nothing compares to hunting the rut in the Midwest

Every time we've ever talked about it, Giles has been the 1st place I've mentioned. But there's something about Texas too.... I haven't checked much midwest because I really need to bracket this hunt around a weekend and keep expenses down. Giles looks like about a 3 hour drive whereas the Texas ranches are gonna be in the 10 hour range give or take. Like I said, keep the suggestions coming!!!

I don't know from experience and I could be 100% wrong, but I would be shocked if there wasn't some sort of compensation for not killing a deer.

I would hope so, but I wouldn't know from experience either.

I've never been on a guided hunting or fishing trip where you got refunded for not killing/catching

I mean neither have I, but it's a little different when you're paying a huge amount of money to kill a huge deer like that and you walk away with nothing at all. It's different than paying an outfitter $2000 to come guide you and your kid around his free range place for a coupe days.

TLDR - go to the midwest.

I just got back from a Canadian hunt and if you get a chance you should go. That being said I wish I knew then what I know now, I would have waited a couple years to go whitetail hunting. Alberta had a big WT kill 3 yrs ago and Saskatchewan had a big kill last year. I plan on going back in 2016 because I saw lots of 120-140 inch deer. As long as they don't have a bad winter the remainder of this year and next, they should be loaded with 160"+ deer.

If you are a bow hunter go to Giles island and either go early of during the rut.

I'm not sure what kind of deer Giles Island is producing on a consistent basis but, we all know what the Midwest is producing.

Also, I would look into doing an Alberta hunt or go up to hunt in the Milk River valley of Montana. There are tons of big whitetails up there and the views are pretty damn good too.

If I could go hunt with any outfitter right now I would go with Big Tine Outfitters in Alberta. The whitetail hunts are in your range also.
