Good lord. Every Boykin I've ever know once they figure it out, they'll pester you to death. Ours LIVES to fetch.

Sounds about right.

I was at home with the boy yesterday (he was "sick"). Ours started pitching a fit to go out. So I opened the door for him and he tore out like his tail was on fire. He "flushed" the Western Scrub jay that taunts him from time to time. Both of them are a case when they go after each other. If you want my honest opinion, I think the Jay uses the dog to scare the other birds of the bird feeder.

The itch to finally get a Boykin has been strong lately, need to start the search for a pup
I'll be involved in another litter fairly soon if everything falls right.

We are infested with fire ants. I'll jump a woodcock every now and then. Havent heard a quail around the house in at least 10 years, probably more.

Common misconception. It’s more about declining habitat.

Turkey and killdeer lay their eggs on the ground and they aren’t being over run by fire ants.

Yep, this is all you need. I would tell you your dog being used to being in the woods with you and not running off is huge, you need a way to locate the dog if it has any range. Either a bell, a beeper collar or a GPS collar.

Yeah for some reason, fire ants is always the number one thing people y’all about when they talk about quail declines. Not sure where all that got started, and yes a fire ant could be bad for a ground nesting bird, but it’s way down the list of what caused the decline for quail

You can just look at what the landscape looked like when “we had quail” and look at what is looks like today and it’s pretty easy to see a quail can’t make it today in the same places they used to thrive

Like I posted before. DDT sprayed by farmers killed them off around here. Was some very bad stuff way back in the day.

Also if you are on facebook, you can check out Louisiana Upland Dogs for more info. Mike Small is the trainer in St Francisville and AJ Chicola is in the Alexandria area.

Well, I never did put much thought into it.

I love bird dogs, really wish we had any type of flushing bird on our place in enough numbers to justify a dog.

It is the habitat changes #1, but everything is working against the quail. When quail thrived, there was small farm that had many fence rows and weed killer wasn't sprayed on all the weeds. Kids came home from school and got guns and shot all kinds of stuff, like armadillos, coons and possums, all that eat quail eggs.

Today farming is clean on large tracts of flat land, much of it that has been laser leveled. Nest predators have increased in numbers and good habitat is fragmented. The good habitat tends to be in strips that concentrate those nest predators.

The only way quail will come back is by burning forests. This is happening on Kisatchie, and being helped by the red-cockaded woodpecker and federal funds

Well bobwhites, let's see if the California quail are compatible with Louisiana.

Thanks! I'll check that FB page.

I'll make a comment on burns. We burned a section of or property this past year and have consistently seen a covey or two of quail more then before. Now, I'm not an expert but I think it helped and not just coincidence. Jumped a covey of 15 or so including 2-3 chicks that didn't fly off when the older ones did. Didn't even see the chicks until they flew off within a few feet of me.

Quail Forever has one biologist in the state to help landowners and looking to hire a second. If you are looking for ways to better utilize your property they are available to help.
