My daughter just put a new windshield on her car in the last six months. Got hit by a rock today. Called progressive and Safelite. Safelite quoted $200 to fix the chip. I know that there are places that do it for less than that. I’ve seen tents set up in parking lots, etc. Any recommendations in Baton Rouge on where to get this done?

You can buy a kit from O'Reilly's or Autozone and do it yourself. It's actually very easy. Just takes a little time.

I've fixed numerous places on wife's and kid's cars and you can't tell there was ever a place there.

Is there any drilling involved?

Nope. I will say that if the windshield has a crack that is running several inches, these kits will not fix that but neither will a windshield repair place.

Here is the 3m kit. There is a video showing the process lower on the page:

Surprising the number of people that don't know this. I do it all the time for my cars. The cost is about $10-20 for the kit and it keeps the crack from spreading across your entire windshield.

To go back to this, if there is a crack running from the spot you can actually drill it with a set of diamond tipped rotary bit. You need a round/ball head. I used a dremel one time and bought the bit from auto zone or something, really don't remember unfortunately.

If you want to try it, use very light pressure and slow speed. You want to go far enough down to get through the outside layer of glass. You will still need to get that crack repair kit to fix that hole the you made, but that is very easy to do.

Progressive used to have a $0 deductible on windshield repairs. I had mine done for free by Safelite a few times when I had insurance with them.

Some states actually still have this written into law (as long as you have comprehensive).
