I think Manchac or around the tangipahoa river area you can catch them. Knew a guy that would catch them around there.

Long time ago, even before the elevated portion of the interstate over the Manchac area was even built, my cousin and I would park on side of 51 and catch all we wanted in the big ditches next to the road. This was between the road and the railroad tracks.
The last time I was in that area, it looked like the ditches were pretty much dried up but on the other side of the tracks it was still swampy in a lot of places.
We did run into snakes and gators back then and that was when gators were protected by Federal Laws. I'd assume they are much worse now with the way the gator population has gotten stupid now.

Like others have stated the pearl is your best option off I-10. The river is still up and the water is very cool. Give it one more month and it should be on. Right around mothers day ever year is when it turns on. The snakes aren't too bad. I never worry about gators. I prefer deep water nets due to the changes in water levels and you can adjust them, but ditch nets work fine. Beef melt is the best. Pogies work but they attract snakes.

Thanks
Just in case you want to give that area a try, I'd advise you to run over there and scout it out to see how it looks before investing in a day trip with the family and all the nets and beef melt as bait.
