First off, I'm not asking for any secret spots.

I'm new down here and wondering if there are general areas or highways where a guy might be able to pick a few gallons of blackberries(within reasonable distance from New Orleans)?

Are they ripe already? Back at the old homeplace, we usually didn't get ripe ones until late June.

Thanks in advance.

There use to be wild blackberries growing in the vacant lot right behind the back stop of the Bonnabel HS softball field in Met/Kenner (Its the field you can see from I-10). My baseball team used to practice back there and some of the moms would come to practice and make a killing picking blackberries.

All along hwy 51 where the old hwy was, that is where I used to go and come back wth about 3 buckets full every time. Speaking of that are the blackberries out now or did they come early this year?

All over the Spillway. Tons and tons. Airline hwy. exit (south) in Norco/Laplace by levee. Follow levee and head left.

Also, Sherburne WMA.

Berries are ripe now and will continue for a while.

Just don't go around traipsing on private property, marked or not.

A few friends and I picked ten gallons in an hour or so. We were actually striking out on the crawfish, so we had to harvest something for our efforts.

That just gives 'em a little extra twang.

Some blackberry wine would be mighty delish.

Try making blackberry mead, the soulless step-child of berry wine and berry beer.
