What's the deal with that camp right next to the interstate

Y'all know exactly the one I'm talking about. Anybody know the guy who owns it? I can't imagine it's that pleasant to have I-10 20 yards one way, and the train tracks 20 yards the other way, but maybe the crabbing is good

Been seeing that camp for years and wondering pretty much the same thing. Looks like a pretty nice place, at least the last time I saw it.

I always wondered how you got to it. If someone was there and you just had to drop something off I think throwing it over the interstate railing would be justified.

I assume boat from Bonnet Carre'
It's been there since I was a kid. I always assumed it was some old hardheaded baw and when he croacked it would disappear, but it's still up. I'm impressed by the staying power.

I hunted with a guy that's a member several times. It's been there for years and there's a waiting list a mile long to get in; memberships are handed down from generation to generation.

When we hunted you couldn't just leave, you had to go back by the camp and log in number and species of ducks killed. The old man had a journal with God knows how many years' records in it.

There is a road on the side of the tracks. You can drive damn near to 310. Its hell turning around however.

Pretty sure that camp, at one time had family ties with the late Eli Haydel, who was born in Raceland and his first wife was from the Norco area. I'm friends with his sons, who shared stories with me of duck hunting in the late 70's / early 80's at that camp. I'll ask again to get the skinny

OnX says the land is owned by the St Charles Land Co II LLC and operated by the Charles E Burgess Jr Trust. But it may be leased out by the camp owners.

I pass it everyday and they have duck boats piled up some days during the season. Wonder how well they do on the birds and fish…

Anybody ever fished that area? I know you can put in in Ponchartrain in Kenner or along the Spillway and get there. Fresh? Brackish? Salty?

Been wondering about that place my whole life. I bet like everywhere else in La, the hunting isn't what it used to be.

I think it’s all private property owned by David Montleon. Same as hotel owner. Have a friend in camp he said ducks and fishing has been a steady decline the past few years.

You turn on the levee from Airline Hwy. There is a locked gate at the end of the road to get in. Railroad employees and camp owners are probably the only ones with keys.

But it’s close enough to home to get away and spend the day but you feel so far away

When we went we never had any, what I would call, good hunts. IIRC we killed a few scaup and maybe a gray or 2.

this
as a kid growing up in the 70s, we used to pound em in the labranche marsh and manchac area
as mentioned the monteleon’s and st charles land syndicate own most of it
not sure if it is that particular camp but one of them is supposedly one of the oldest duck hunting clubs in the country…

Wouldn't surprise me. Isn't one of the "Yacht Clubs" or something in New Orleans or Metairie the oldest in the country, or second to a NYC one or something? I hunted the Big Lake and some marshy cutouts more toward the Slidell side on a buddy's grandpas spot. He has pictures from the old days with good big ducks stacked up galore. When we went we shot one grey and watched the rest fly to some reserve that you can't hunt anymore or something. Definitely a different style of hunting down there than I grew up on but saddens me nonetheless.

The ducks were thick in the marsh in the early 90's. The Marsh Club, Labranch, and St. Rose Club all have access to the road. We used to kill rabbits by the dozens along that road. Used to be good bass fishing in the marsh and around 2nd dam. Haven't been back there in years.
