What’s a ballpark price to build vs hire someone to build wooden fence?

Looking to build 200ft total. 6ft high, Cedar, single sided with 4x4 poles every 7.5 feet.
One walk gate and one gate to drive into.
From someone that is familiar with fence building, what would cost be to build myself vs hire someone?

Cheapest you might find with still quality work will be about $21 per linear foot, and $350 for a 4’ walk gate. Not sure about a drive gate. Probly around $750 for it. To have someone do it for you you’re lookin at around 5k

When ballparkimg I estimate labor to be as equal to materials. Every project is different but it’s a good starting point.

If you have the tools (air compressor and nail guns), time and know how, it’s worth it to do yourself. I bought the empty lot next to my house back in 2011. I extended my back yard fence all the across the lot and connected it to the existing fence of the neighbors. It was around 100ft and had a 12ft drive thru gate on 2 6x6 posts. I think the materials were around $1500.
Took me a 3 days to get it done.

I just had a guy quote me $15/ft the other day. Basic fence, but 8ft boards. These guys going $20/ft must be smoking crack

you should jump on that then
because 20/ft is the standard rate for wood fence furnished and installed

I install a lot of fence
that’s what it costs

I would be cautious of $15 a foot.

Check references.

My sister went with a lower quote and wound up with extra costs.

He just finished up doing a bunch of drainage at my house, so maybe that's why he cut me a break. I still don't find it that cheap

20 A foot installed would be $4,000.00 for 200 feet

What would it cost me to do it myself 200 foot?

My brother in law has auger tool and all already and has built a few, willing to help me do it.

any swinging dick can shoot the fence boards on the rails
setting the posts (and in a straight line) is the hard part, a part I would want none of

if you have access to a tractor with a PTO auger that’s what I’d do. Otherwise a two man gas auger will get it done but you will hate it

2 years ago I paid $16/foot for 6' tall Pine with a 10' gate on 6x6 posts. Cedar is considerable more expensive.
If you have the tools, time and know how, it is way less expensive. I have none of the above, so I paid to have it done.

I used a trailerable auger intended from Stein. I did about 30 holes by myself in less than two hours. Easy as could be.

I just helped my brother build a fence with two gates at his house, used a pair of impact drivers and deck screws to fasten fence boards and runners. His neighbor had a fence built by an Ascension company and they used nail guns, had problems within two weeks of it being finished. Even ring-shank nails won't hold very well after the wood weathers a bit.

Do it yourself and save half.

Take you time on the poles and make sure they're straight and level
Once they are in it's easy as hell to run the runners (or rails)
Use deck screw for boards. Once to that stage, you should have 200' done in 3 hrs tops.

Last time I checked into this, it was more expensive to hire someone and costs more to have someone build it for you.

I’m working on building a 6 ft fence right now, 140 ft total. Posts are set, runners are hung. I’m picking up the pickets and gate material tomorrow. Including posts, 2x4 runners, concrete, auger rental, and screws, I’m about $550 in so far. Pickets will be about $335 with tax, gate hardware will be about $50-$60 I’m guessing. If I’m doing the math right I’ll stay under $1000 for 140 ft of pine fence. $1000 would be just above $7/ft and I know it’ll be done right. YouTube is helpful with setting posts. That’s the hardest part.

A couple tips - stagger your runners with 8 ft and 16 ft 2x4s. This will make the fence stronger. Also put about 6 inches of gravel in the post holes before setting the posts. This will keep the bottom from rotting.

I agree with everything you said except this. 200 ft would be 435+ pickets. 6 screws in each. That takes a while especially while trying to keep the tops lined up together with a string line and level since they’re not cut perfectly. If there’s any kind of slope or hill it can get tricky.
