I bought a used HDS Carbon 7 for my kayak and I am running the power to a 12 aph Lithium battery and want to know if I have the right fuse. I bought this at academy.
Marine Raider Inline AGC Fuse

Is this what I need?

Will work. Put it close to the unit side. Might need 3 amp max size I think, check the book as I don't know what newer models can handle. This one might be slightly better though.

Inline buss fuse should be fine. Manufacturer rec is 5A.

Just curious, that didn't come with a fuse from the factory?

The fuse holder came with a 30 amp fuse. I bought the Lowrance unit used, so it didnt come with any fuses just power wire.

Check which size wire you're using. This will determine the fuse size I think. Being you bought it used not sure which size is hooked to it. It's there to protect the length of wire from the battery.

It appears to be 16-gauge wire. What amp fuse for that size wire?

Just put what the manual recommends. Probably 3A or 5A. Those don’t use too much power. Being it’s a kayak, I can’t imagine your wire run is very long.

In a kayak where you put the fuse isn't going to matter. In a boat you don't want a section of unfused wire running through your boat so you put fuses near the power source.

The fuse is to protect from the alternator on an outboard that puts out 30-40 amps. I wouldnt bother with a fuse on a kayak with only a 12aH battery.

Good point. Only if you hook the wires up wrong will they burn up.

The fuse (of that sort) does not protect the device but the wire. So check to see what the device draws and use something bigger. I'd say using a 10 amp or smaller will be just fine. 3 or 5 should be easy to find in a bus fuse so use either.
