I'm torn between the Ruger M77 Hawkeye Compact and the Weatherby Mark V Lightweight (.308). This will be my first rifle being that I'm much more of a duck hunter.

Why not a 7mm-08. Cool little round.
No question. Was just talking about .270 based rounds. While we are there, I'd rather have a .260 than 7mm-08.

Wasn't really taking away from the 270wsm, just don't see what it does better then the 270 win. If anything I would go to a 6.5 or 7mm bullet if I truly wanted a "long range".rifle.

Yea I don't really see the advantage of the short mags, at least for me. My .270 will do more than fine for any shot I could possibly take on the lease in MS or on the land in LA.

Actually I own and shoot a 300 wsm and I have shot and Hand loaded for a couple of 270 wsm. Like you, I was voicing my opinion as well as my experiences. Sorry you're butt hurt.

Nothing like a cartridge discussion for a flame war.

BTW, I love detachable clips.

Yes. Yes I would. The 6.5 has got my attention right now.

Right?

The wsm argument is the new generations 270 vs 30-06.

And we're off

On that topic though, (well kinda) my rifle has a fixed mag which I don't mind but I'm not in love with, and my dad and brothers both have a detachable one. I hunted a while with a Browning BAR and it had a hinged mag. It was completely pointless IMO, if I can't take the mag all the way out I'd rather just have it built in. I never liked that gun, it was heavy and I was always worried about dinging up the wood.

After thinking about it, I will say this about the wsm. The short action is nice. Especially in the browning xbolt with the shorter bolt throw. That's somewhat negated by their feed problems. I haven't had feed problems in my 300wsm, but both 270wsm's I've shot had feed problems. When I asked my smith about the issue he basically said it is what it is.

The reasons I choose the .300 WSM over the .300 WinMag are that I wanted a shorter barrel, lighter gun, and because I like a detachable magazine, a smaller clip. When I decided on the Tikka, I looked at both and the WSM seemed to have a smoother action.

There is really no difference in the performance of the two guns.

Is that a characteristic of the xbolt?

The hinged mag is nice in that you can reload/unload faster I guess. I have a detachable mag on my xbolt and hinged floorplate on my 700. I'm good either way.

I hunt with either a Marlin 336w in 30-30, or a slicked up Mauser 1896 in 6.5x55 swedish.
