If this thread doesn't make a case for an outdoor board i don't know what will. I count over 25 different users that have chimed in on a cartridge preference.

.308 win 150 grain Remington Corelockt, plenty of power good accuracy. 2" high at 100 yd and a 9" kill zone means center the cross hairs and pull the trigger out to about 350' without wind.

7.62 x 39 Wolf JHP for hogs (absolutely devastating carnage)

My next rifle will be a 25-06 I believe.

I took my AK into the woods a few times but never had a chance to pull the trigger. I am sure it would do just fine on whitetail. I only wish I had bought five or six of those SKS rifles when they were less than $100.

shot needs to be PERFECT and close

I'm looking at a new rifle and am considering this and a 300 WIN Mag. Any thoughts you could share on the 7mm 08 would be appreciated.

As an offshoot to this question, what rifle would you recommend for someone just starting out as a deer hunter? Also i'm taking notes on the rounds mentioned that drop them in their tracks, I'd really prefer to not have to track a deer through swamp/woods. I'd imagine good shot placement will take care of a lot of that.

you can not go wrong with a 30-06 or .270. plus, rounds are easier to find and a little cheaper than some of other rounds mentioned.

under 300 yards my 11 year old has hit and dropped 9 deer. I have done the same with 3. 7mm08 is flat shooting and easy to shoot - no muzzle jump. and some of the deer have been bruisers...

a well placed lighter load is better than a poorly placed or missed heavy load.

This would be my advice as well. Also optics make a huge difference. $300-500 dollars will get you a decent rifle. And you can expect to pay at least that for a decent mid range scope. For about $1k you can get a nice deer setup that will last you a lifetime.

30.06 because it is what I bought used years ago. I would probably go with a 270 if buying new.

Close is a relative term. I drop 60-150 lb hogs with my iron sight SKS from 100 yards frequently. And if I need a 2nd shot or a 19th shot for that matter, it is only a short trigger pull away.

As far as PERFECT, the shot placement should be no more (and no less) important than with any other round. Use a hollow point 7.62 round and hit the animal with poor placement out to 100 yrds and you will still recover it.

It's not really the rounds, but the shot placement that counts. Bear in mind that you can have the perfect round and perfect shot placement and still have a deer run for a little ways.

I have a Savage weather warrior series and really like it. The composite stock and the stainless steel cuts down on maintanence and it was reasonably priced. It comes with a 4 round detachable magazine which I was also looking for since we spotlight hogs here and it is pain emptying a non detatchable mag everytime you get on the road.

When narrowing down caliber I decided I wanted a round that was cheap, and readily available at any walmart or ammo store. It needed to be versitle enough to use for predator hunting all the way up to Elk and big hogs. I wanted a round that had multiple loads and configurations commerically available also. I ended up with 3 possible rounds, 30-06. .308, and .270. I chose .308 due to the short bolt action as opposed to long (30-06)and the slightly heavier bullet possibiltes (270). The muzzle velocity was also good in this round.

The comments on optics are good. Spend what you can to get a good scope. There are often good sales on Ebay. I got a Luopold 3X9X50 for $100 of retail still in the original pkg for mine.

Just remember there is no "right" gun or caliber for every situation. So, own a bunch!
