Jackson FD!! I'm on the preorder list and should be getting it at the end of May. I'll post my opinion of it when it comes in.

They haven't even released the final prototype. Where are you getting it from?

I will just go ahead and say it:

Money no object and not motor, get an Outback and be done with it. If you want to fool with a trailer, get a PA14 and be done with it.

Hoboes are awesome with a great layout, rod storage, and stability. They were the innovators in pedal drives and quality is second to none from what I've seen.

That being said, I use the reverse in my Slayer Propel so often, I can't imagine not having the ability to easily pedal backwards. Hobie's plans to implement a mirage drive that can go in reverse are admirable but the implementation doesn't look too practical. I can stand and fish and if I want to go back a little, I reach down and push a pedal with my hand. When I'm seated, I have instant reverse and don't have to worry about reaching for and pulling a cord first.

Look on YouTube for ICAST 2016 Pedal Kayaks and you'll see all the new models that should be coming out in the Spring.

rented one in PA on the Alleghaney River.

Don't think a jet is great for grassy ponds though. I may be wrong.

We went 10 miles up river then floated back. Great trip.

Maybe 5 years ago it was that simple, but with the range of pedal kayaks out there now, I don't think it's that straight forward. WS, Native, Old Town, and now Jackson all have pedal crafts and I think they are better kayaks than the hobies from a fishing perspective.

$5400 for a small kayak? I think I would buy a wide bottom jon boat with a 25hp instead. Crazy.

I obviously haven't been in one, but on their website the first thing I see is a guy about to fall out of the thing while making a fly cast.

due to water levels I don't think we could have went as far upstream in a jon boat. just saying they have their moments. Its was nice to stay dry since it was cold out. We didn't fish out of them though, we would pull up on shore and wade fish.

I'm starting to look into micro skiff like this H Skiff 13

The PA12 I rented had the new 180 Mirage Drive in it, honestly I didn't care for it. Granted it was my first experience with a Hobie and that drive so I'm sure there's a learning curve but I didn't like having to reach down to swap between forward and reverse, also there were a few instances where the "direction" I had pulled didn't quite lock in all the way, and the only way to tell was to pedal and find out I still was going the wrong way.

I could definitely dig a solo skiff. I wasn't trying to crap on the mokai, just thinking for that kind of money you have a lot of options to consider.

Pack and Paddle is going to be carrying them, I checked them out a few weeks ago in person and they're pretty cool. There's a used one with a Mercury 5hp for sale in Louisiana for $2600 I saw this morning.
