Is there a chart

Wouldn’t that be nice, lol.

I think it just comes down to spending time on the JDM sites. Then you’ll start to recognize scorpion is curado, engetsu is chronarch, morethan is steez, etc.

I do remember about 10 years ago having huge issues with curado 70’s. Then several years later someone handed me a scorpion and it was the most WTF Shimano moment ever. Why they don’t offer scorpion versions of curados in the US makes zero sense to me.

Isn't that about when they went away from the dark green E model to the "new" ones? It's one of the things that soured me on Shimano, although I realize everybody does it.

Yup. The curado and chronarch line went to shite. I had an entire front deck full of malfunctioning braking systems, bad bearings, work out gears, tension knobs falling off, blah. Soured me on the Malaysian thing too.

Some of the cheaper Daiwas like the Tatula are made in Thailand, even on the Digitaka site. Would you avoid those?

Well as of the past several years, it seem like Daiwa churns out about 5 different Tatulas per year. So now there's tats anywhere from $150 - $300 in price range.

I'll be honest, I'm not the biggest Tatula fan, but it has nothing to do with questioning their sound mechanical design or function. I'm just not a big fan of larger framed reels.

Tatulas are very popular though. And I haven't heard many complaints from the various origin of manufacturing being a big complaint.

Wow I thought I was the only person buying JDM reels. Been doing it for years in both Diawa and Shimano.

The one spinning reel I have is my favorite ever.

I was considering Tatulas just because I have the Coastal SV TW and I've been happy with it, and the Tatula Elite appears to be the Coastal without corrosion resistant bearings. The Coastal is 6.9 oz and the Zillion is 6.7 so there shouldn't be too much difference in those frame sizes? I'd go for a JDM Zillion if I could find one at $300, LH and at least 7.1, but the only place that has one in stock they want $360 plus shipping.

I’d wait til the zillions come back in stock at $300. They’re worth the wait. And much better than any tat I can promise you that.

Or you could spring for the new Metanium. They’re $298 from several JDM sites. The Met is salt safe too.

I’m all Lews currently for one reason even though my reel mechanic and someone else shits on them. Hard to pay retail for Shimano or diawa.

Coming in here way late but I have three baitcasters:

Lews Laser MG (out of production)
These are 7:1 or 6:1 so I use them for spoons, spinners, and cranks. As long as they are paired on the right rod, there's no better workhorse that I've found. I've dropped them in the water, forgot to clean them, no issues.

Lews Mach 1
This one is 8:1 and can throw a mile. It has to have flouro as a backer at least, but that's not big deal (even though I prefer braid). This is my main real. It's light af, casts far and smooth, and can do the ponchartrain pop and recover line really fast.

Daiwa Tatula 100
I hate this real. I use it for pitching and punching because I can't throw it for shite. But, the drag never slips and it allows for the sensitivity I need when texas rigging.
