Me and a buddy would really like go elk hunting and are planning a trip sometime this next fall in November before Thanksgiving. I know Colorado,Wyoming, Idaho, Montana,Utah and new Mexico have elk but which state is it easiest to get tags. We would like to go and be able to hunt somewhere without a guide. More of just a backcountry hunt. Maybe pick up a black bear or miley tag as well. Any suggestions?

Easiest tags are probably Colorado

Best chance at a trophy are probably Washington (Roosevelt Elk) or New Mexico

as in 2018?

that's going to rule out Wyoming, Montana, Utah, New Mexico - all are draw states

Colorado is true over the counter. I think Idaho is as well.

I'd suggest checking out gohunt.com. They breakdown the states and units very simply.

Preciate it. yeah we are gonna have to go to an over the counter state this year. We aren't looking for a great trophy the first year just wanna bag one even if its a cow. Probably gonna be bow hunting as well and like i said would like to get sort of a camping trip out of it as well.

Arizona
New Mexico
Utah
Nevada

are all the best in the world for trophy bulls, like 400" But they are all either extremely long draw processes, or extremely expensive landowner tags

Montana
Idaho
Wyoming
Colorado

are much easier to get tags and have very solid bulls, 300"+ all over the place

this is going to be super tough in November (maybe even illegal). Check the regulations for wherever you go. Like I sad gohunt is very good resource. Some of these states have completely different regulations across different units in the same state. Most have very specific seasons that last 1 week ea (archery, muzzleloader, rifle 1, rifle 2, etc)

Go to the Colorado website. They have an elk hunting tutorial. Lots of good info.
Second and third seasons are OTC bull tags in lots of units. Everybody in Texas hunts the second season but you can do fine if you let other hunters push them to you. Hunt dark timber and passes.
One of you should have a bear tag.

it may be. It depends on the unit/state. I know in MT you can hunt from 9/1-11/5 with a bow.

But I think in CO you have like 3 week window for bow, but once the rifle weeks open archery is closed.

Go to gohunt
Pick CO OTC units, then dive into the regulations to see.

mylsuhat may have better info than me since hes hunting CO this year. I have more info on MT since that's where I'm going.

There's only 1 grizzly tag in the lower 48 and it's in WY and this is the first year.

ie, DO NOT SHOOT A GRIZZLY unless he/she has mae you bleed already

Bowhunting is different. I was talking about rifle seasons. I think bow starts late August. Find active wallows(muddy) and hunt them. Get a cow call. Go for it! Wish I had started earlier. You can definitely kill elk on your own.
