What kind do you have, and how is it mounted?

Just got a new one, its a whip (metal) antenna mounted on a positional mount to the top of the T-Top

What to check for is the db gain. 3' or 8'. Most 3' are good up to about 15 miles. Over cast days, a bit more. An 8' is good out to around 25 miles. Over cast days, maybe out to 35 miles. Also, how high one mounts it makes a difference. High is better!

I'm looking at a SHAKESPEARE Mariner 8300 8' 6dB VHF Antenna. I guess I could keep in my rod box when I'm not using it.

I had two of those on my last boat. One for VHF and the other for AM/FM. Mounted them on top of the T-top. Lay them down when on trailer and put them up when on the water. I could catch NOLA and BR stations while fishing even several miles south of last island

That's what my buddy has on his offshore rig. He just mounted it to his t-top.

Don't go cheap on the antenna bracket. NO PLASTIC and ONLY SS.
Not much need of a VHF these days with cell phones unless you run under bridges or run the Mississippi river down south. Still nice to have.

Get the heavy duty ss bracket.
Not much need for VHF? That's crazy talk. If your boat is going down, who are you going to call? The sheriff who is 20 miles away? The coast guard that is 60 miles away? Or the 20 boaters within 5 miles of you.
