I had called them and was told they are out. What would yall recommend to plant on 30 acres in basin? Typically pretty wet area. I was thinking of planting more of what's on there pecan and willow oak. Would white oak grow that environment?

Look at louisiana forestry association. It cost me around 230 per year for 500 acres and includes two memberships, one for me and one for the land owner.

Drake has the same (if not more) old school camo items on sale on their website. I have bought a few things over the last two months. I have had to return one thing with no issue to Drake. They still have the blind bags on there website in stock.
re: WMA - Not Allowed on property prior to 4am?
Posted by Mako on 11/13/14 at 3:54 pm to TigerBait413
I read the manual as well - cannot enter until 4am. However the real question is how many people actually oobey the rule?
I am heading to Pearl River WMA. I figure if they were going to enforce the rule, it would be on Saturday.
I am guessing that a few hundred people will be there and most will be trying to get a head start.

WMA - Not Allowed on property prior to 4am?
Posted by Mako on 11/13/14 at 2:59 pm
I know several people on here have experience hunting public land. I am heading to a WMA on Saturday to duck hunt for the opener. I have never been duck hunting on a WMA and wanted some clarification on the 4am rule - as I am sure the game wardens will be out on opening morning.
Can you get check in at the self clearing permit section and wait at the launch or are not allowed on the property all together? Can you put your boat in the water, but just stay at the dock?
TIA of your help. Best of luck
I am assuming it will be an all out blitz to get to spots on Saturday with hundreds of people sky-blasting. I'm sure some people will find a way to leave prior to 4am. I just hate to be the one to show up at 3:45 to 50 empty trailers.

Look in your area for a CFP at an accounting firm. This matches what you are looking for - a hourly consultant who does both tax and finance. They are two sperate things, but this sounds like what you are looking for. There are a few CFP CPA's in BR.
Bring everything you need to shoot except table and chairs. They have that, but thats it.
Has anyone taken the pre-trial DWI driving class online at offrecord.com? Just wondering how long the course takes?
I would say I can deal with most things. But, I get really pissed at people who don't understand the seriousness of the outdoors. Maybe I'm hard nosed and learned to do things a certian way, but for example I have a deer lease that I manage carefully and spend alot of time working on it. Then have friends that don't sight in there guns - followed by trying to shoot everythign and think they can shoot 500 yards. In fishing, it would have to be either wasting bait every cast or not understanding how tides work so they want to move every five mins during slack tide.
Hear similar things about Biloxi Marsh with reds, but its my understanding there are back in the ponds - need a bay boat with maybe a push pole type ponds.
I have always wanted to fish Cat in the winter, never have or tried. I would imagine the grass flats might be productive on a warm day in the afternoon.

I used to run a fence company in college. I bought several brands over the course of a few years - rigid, porter cable, mikita, etc. I now only have dewalt. Nothing but yellow and have renovated multiple houses with my dewalts tools.
However, I heard Home Depot bought dewalt. Don't know about the newer stuff.

If you are just looking for advice, not a salesman, I would look at the larger local accounting firms to see if someone can do some fee based planning, I know one firm in BR has a CFP that does this and they are not a salesman. Just my two cents, it's sometimes better to find someone to help planning that doesn't have a dog in the hunt.
My only advice, never do anythign solely for money. I have had offers with 20% to 25% raises, however at my current job I get 22 PTO days and any day I work more than 4 hours it is not considered PTO. So I get about a 30 to 35 days off a year, lots of flex time, and I work when I want to work. That being said, at some point the increase in money will move from a 'want' to a 'need.'
Also, without knowing the % raise/increase 40K may not be materail. I'm guessing it means something for you to be asking.

re: Valuing a Business
Posted by Mako on 10/23/13 at 8:53 am to poule deau
Alot of factors to consider, I do BV for a living.
Here are a few:
-With contracts - consider the duration, renewal - compt.& personal relationships.
-Look at the books - trends and what is he running through the business that would be personal
-Consider what the value would be if they guy you plan on keeping on leaves and starts his own line of business? What's stopping him?
- consider if you are buying assets or stock of the company - has tax implications
-Look at the industry - trends
Just a few considerations

re: Looking for outdoor dog bed recommendations

I have one from Orvis - its rated for outdoor use and have been very please - it too is under the cover but, still holds up to dampness and other elements. Never molded. Orvis has alot of coupons and sales that take a $75 bed down to $50.
I also have a few others from orvis, My dogs like them all. They are easy to clean and hold up really well.

I have a female 5yr old and my parents have her brother. My female has been trailed to blood trail and does quite well. She can retrieve well and enjoy's fetching, but is gun shy. So no duck hunting her. I am a bow hunter so I trained her when she was young to blood trail. She does quite well when there is good blood then the trail falls off but not that welll without some blood. I have to keep her on a check cord bc she will take off after live deer when we are trailing.
Both swim really well and love the water. They go saltwater fishing with us alot and are strong swimmers. The male eats up the water and would spend all day in it if he could. The only concern I would have is the cold water.
Best of luck.

Moving has been considered, but my whole family is from and lives in BR. I want to stay for many reasons.
I went to high school in BR but, college/masters out of state. I currently work for a college alumni, but went to a smaller school.
Question, for those in the finance sector - what type of work do you do and do you like it? what size company do you work for?
TIA

Finding Mid-Level Finance Job - BR
Posted by Mako on 9/13/13 at 3:12 pm
I am currently a financial analyst in Baton Rouge, mainly on the management consulting and PE side of things. I have around 4 years exp. with an MBA. I have been looking to make a move over the last year for various reasons. I have been using monster and indeed to find jobs. But there is few and far between as for quaility jobs. Most appear to only be from large companies. I have had several interviews over the last 6 months with three offers. Most have been with the larger companies in baton rouge, but most have been more on the techinical side in more of a numbers only role- which I am trying to get away from a pure sit behind a desk and run excel models life. I have had good $ offered, not great. Want to find something mixed business and finance.
1.Anyone have a better resource for finding jobs?
2.Does anyone know where the mid to small business find talent?
3. Anyone have any recommendations for fields to move into?

About how big a cage do I need? Just a chicken wire circle will work?
I looked at building cages or buying tubes. Does anyone know where to get discount grow tubes? They are more expensive than the trees

Planting Trees at Camp - Help
Posted by Mako on 9/6/13 at 4:03 pm
I am looking to plant between 25 to 50 fruit trees and 100 oak/pecan trees or so per year for the next couple years at my place in the spillway. Trying to plant something extra for the deer and to give back to the landowners (its half ag fields with soybeans every year). I have a couple questions about the best wayt o go about it.
Should I by seedlings or started trees? (4 inches or so tall, but already started)
Where is the cheapest place to get seeds/started trees around Baton Rouge or New Roads?
I was wondering if anyone had any tips as to protecting them/keeping them alive?
What's the ebst time of year to plant? I am assuming in March?
TIA

re: Hunting Lease Liability
Posted by Mako on 9/6/13 at 12:33 pm to tigrbaseball
Its fairly cheap. I just leased 507 acres and got my insurance through the LA forestry association. I think the minium cost is $230, ($180 for insurance and 50 for memebership dues) inculdes memebership for you and the land owner in LA Forestry and coverage up to 500 acres. The liability covers you and the landowner ($30 for landowner coverage). $1,000,000 each occurance, with $2,000,000 aggregate with zero decutable. If its over 500 acres its .13 an acre.
The person I leased it from is a lawyer and I consulted my lawyer, both said a hold harmless waiver is good to have and standard in most lease agreements, but if something actually happened - Hunting acccidents tend to be fairly serious when they occur, the waiver would most likely not hold up in court.

Member of Lottie wildlife - about 18000 acres in the spillway north of surburne WMA. I justed leased 500 acres of land north of morganza from my family. Can't wait to have my own honey hole that I can control. Its mainly a large bean field but, surrounded by 8 year old cut over that holds a lot of deer. Saw a handful every hunt last year. Plus nice to not have to worry about rules/fines.

Same here, I don't even think about it anymore. I have a ligted jeep with bigger tires, I think an auto would suck. It would strain the hell out of the transmission

Does anyone here have access to a recent - last few years - to the AICPA National Map Survey? - its a survey for CPA firms and includes compensation benchmarks. Robert Half publishes a free comp survey, but it is clearly high. Looking for other resources that are realible.
.270 great round for deer. .30-.30 is fun, but has distance limitations

I would agree, maybe a little higher for local CPA - depending on how big the local firm is.
Question for those Accountants or similar role, how much were you making 3 years later - assume senior role? How big a jump in salary is reasonable? Subjective question I know.

Its a great concept for a side job/creating passive income. It would most likely take years to start seeing benenfits. I would just charge a fee up front.
However, odds are the operating aggreement would be the key here. Would you be voting - most likely not, so as a minority owner you would have zero control on distributions, actions, and other key elements of the business.
Plus, by being an equity owner, you are assuming a piece of the risk of the project if it flops.

I had my female spayed at age 6 months. No side effects hunting - she has great feel for it but was gun shy. Now she is a great blood trailing dog but still gets after everything around the house and camp, just gun shy. Our male was clipped after 18 months, but he nature is super chill so he didn't change much. It takes alot for him to get going, he goes to the office every day (more of just a pet now). But, he never had it to begin with.
There is a good monay bears on our place in lottie LA. The LDWLF does alot of studies on them throughout the year and collects data. We see them all the time.
It's stressed heavily the difference between blakc bears and hogs. That would be a bad mistake
