re: Venting a Prop

What is happening is that X amount of exhaust is pushed out the holes as you take off. It is in fact creating a cavatation which the prop speeds up faster. To small of holes, not much cavitation, Little to no help, to big, to much prop slip/cavitation.

I always thought it was just for sound...??? If you vent it allows the exhaust to come out the sides rather than into the water.. I can't really prove my point without making silly motor sounds

IS no one worried that drilling holes will create a balance issue and cause vibrations?
I'd take it to a pro.
I'd take it to a pro.

You're only talking about .250" holes. Very little weight. And you drill the holes 120 deg around, so should not affect the balance. However, i'm willing to be that even if you drilled only 1 hole you would have no balance issue.
side not: I work at a machine shop and have the right equipment, so it's not like i'm eyeballing with a cordless drill.

Also change the size of each
Once you have holes drilled, you can add a cap and then drill the plastic with a drill to get the appropiate size hole. Alot of bullet guys and stroker guys with 1.62 gears run with a full set of holes and another set 7/8" added as well. Thats what I had to run on my last boat.

This is critical information. LOL I would have little worries of a machinest doing this. I thought you were in the garage with a Dewalt.
But, at the RPMs an outboard will spin a prop, even a .250 hole will make a difference. Think about how much weight it takes to have a tire out of balance or a driveshaft - the weight of a washer on a driveshaft is all it takes to cause vibrations or eliminate them.

I wish I had considered this before repitching my prop. My prop guy never suggested it, but he doesn't deal in Merc props at all.

Thats your problem Your better off shipping it to Bo or Mark Croxton. Mark Croxton has a one day turn around. Thats rare in the prop business, especially someone as good as him that stays busy
agreed, there's simply no one better than these two i know of...Bo made a night and day difference with my prop

Mark and I go back too long to not use him.

Hes done me so wrong on props. I still use him for trolling motors but after this last one I might not again. Went to pick it up after install and he didnt even pull the wire to the batterys in the back. just left it balled up in the bow.
