A good buddy of mine invited us down to his house boat in Venice marina to fish that weekend. I know the river is high and we really do not have large enough boats or enough knowledge of the area to try to get after specks, especially if its windy. That being said, i was wondering the OB's advice on catching Reds and maybe even a few bass. I was thinking finding drains with shrimp tipped plastics (cork and bottom) would be the ticket for reds and flipping plastic against the canes might get a few bass bites. Would it be necessary to run around the fringe bays to catch reds, or should we stick to the inside (wagon wheel area.) Any knowledge you maybe able to pass down about fishing this time of year down there would be greatly appreciated.

I'd start in Yellow Cotton Bay.

You are going when Venice is at its worse. Decent water will be hard to find unless you really know that place and even then it's limited. Around Grand Liard and yellow cotton may be your best option, most of the wagon wheel will be a muddy mess.

You might find some clear water out in the sound. I caught real nice trout out there this time of the year. Surface water will be muddy, but under that is saltwater. Fish the well heads that have shells in 10' to 15' of water.

Trout this time of the year caught out there avg 5+lbs. You just have to find the right rigs that hold them.

Another option would be to stay in the house boat and trailer to yellow cotton if they aren't there (they should be), pick up launch at Empire and either fish the west side or gout the locks cross the river and fish that area you can usually find some clean water between there and California point even with a high river.

We used to do this. Cross the river, go through Ostricka locks. My cousin had a camp on a dead end canal off a bayou south of the locks.I remember a great day around Raccoon Pt. I think. Also several blast and cast days there.
Good Times! Cuz and camp both gone. RIP Keith......

I prefer to launch at riverside and go around the locks on the cut on the south side but figured that would be a lot to explain for someone new to the area, and knowing where to back the boat up at riverside with the river covering the parking lot and launch.

I exact thoughts. Too much to explain on a message board. Venice for the next month or so is not for people who have never been and what to experience what Venice can be.

I know the conditions will suck, but you have to go to know

is there any place to launch other than Venice marina that affords better access to Yellow Cotton?

Just go out and catch reds for the day and then when you come back use plastic worms and fish around all the house boats at the Venice Marina and you’ll be guaranteed to catch bass
