As the title says.
I just changed the oil in a used Toyota Hughlander with 30k miles on it. Dealer sent it to a Firestone to get tires and change oil.
They left the filter cartridge out. I am going to contact them and let them know.
Any concerns on running it that long without a filter?

Doubt it but that's really shitty. If it was a different brand car I would be more worried.

Car is immaculate and we didn't take some big trip.
They also stripped out the filter housing since they didn't have the right filter wrench. I'll ha e to get another housing or risk never getting it off.
I figured a Firestone dealer I wasn't worried.
When I bought my truck years ago I changed everything as soon as I got it. I didn't with this one...

Gotdamn. Those threads in the housing are thick. How in the hell.

It's the outside housing. The toyotas require a filter wrench with 24mm socket. They look like they used a pair of channel locks

Sucks
Trusted my tundra to a jiffy lube once in college and I think they used a hammer and chisel to get the filter cap off, had all kinds of gouges in the plastic
never trusted anyone but myself or toyota again

Yeah. I have one. It's really thick aluminum. There's a center plug that a square 1/2" drive fits in I think.

Go straight to the GM of the dealership would be my suggestion.

This doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.
What kept the oil from draining out w/o a filter?

I'm thinking you actually change the filter media and the filter "housing" is reused. I'm guessing the took the old filter out and didn't put a new media in. So the oil hasn't been filtered for 5k miles.

where the hell have I been. Never heard of that.

Exactly.
There was no filter cartridge. 5k miles.

Toyotas, or at least the larger engines, have a filter housing that you unscrew and replace a cartridge inside. There’s a plug where you can drain the filter before opening it too. Makes oil changes either a massive pain in the arse or a breeze depending on whether you have the right filter wrench to fit the housing.

Damn, learn something new every day.

If you have any of the oil that was removed, I would send it to get analysis. They can tell you if it has bearing material in it.
It's probably fine though

I caught it in a reusable catchpan before I pulled the housing and realized.

Pretty shitt of them but that won’t hurt anything.

Firestone is terrible
I could write a memoir of an experience we had with them.
Bottom line - they replaced the fuel pump on my wife's car, our house was 2 miles from the shop and before she got home the car died. They refused to admit they misdiagnosed, fixed the wrong thing or refund our $900.00
It ended up being some sensor that was under factory recall and Toyota fixed it for free.
I had to go to corporate and spend what felt like 900 hours to get our money refunded,

We have a highlander. So far I’ve done 3 oil changes on it.
I have the correct filter tool and still hate it. The little drains they give you are hard as hell to get in the filter housing. I hate the whole system. Not to mention having to remove the carpet from underneath before I start.
Other than that, great vehicle.

How did the oil stay in the engine with no filter? Did I not understand the title?
