Novice here-looking for suggestions on when to plant and what grows best. Start small this year and then get bigger. Have about a 10 x 20 space to use.

I'm tempted with this nice weather, but my stuff is still in the trays. That way I can bring it inside in case it freezes again.

I already have tomatoes, banana, jap, and green bell peppers.

By buying early and keeping them in the trays when I do decided to plant I'll have a good head start as opposed to buying smaller stuff the day I decide to plant.

Besides the normal tomato and bell peppers, I like doing sugar snap peas(need something they can climb), green onions, and squash / zuccini(need room to grow so don't plant too close).

According to what you like. I'll plant tomatoes first (now), and squash, peas, snap beans, peppers, and corn in the next three weeks. I plant 40 x 60.

For 10x20 I'd go with about 6 tomatoes (BN444 & Amelia are my favorite), a couple of squash plants (they grow to about 4' diameter if given the room), and your favorite peppers. Maybe a row of PH peas or bush beans if you like them.

Tip I used when small gardening: buy a roll of 36" visquene (plastic) and place between rows. You can cut it down if you're making smaller rows, but you will be glad you did when the weeds start growing. Fertilize and water liberally and you'll be giving stuff away.

SCwTiger you are the man! Sounds perfect- thanks to everyone for the suggestions.

Think I will go with Bell Peppers, squash & Zucchini, tomatoes, maybe cucumbers, maybe lettuce of some type, carrots. Might narrow it down a bit, but they are my first choices.

Yeah, I wouldn't even try that. What I had left went bad this week.

You can plant now in S. Louisiana. The chance of frost is over.

I usually plant:
tomatoes-now
bush beans (plant two rows then another two rows two weeks later to stagger the harvest)-just put seeds in the ground
Peppers-cowhorn, banana, red & yellow bells
Squash
Zucchini
Canteloupe
Eggplant
Cucumber

*the rest I will wait to plant about in another 2 weeks

Do people here grow marigold among the vegetable and fruit plants? Or how about any pollinator-friendly flowers?

I recommend this book

square foot gardening

It's great to maximize the amount of veggies you can plant in a small space. Tells you when you should be planting stuff, of course you have to account for louisiana weather

I do marigolds on the borders and stuff. It turns out well.

I do not know if it helps the the growth or tastes of things but it looks nicer.

yep...my grandpa taught me that marigolds repel insect pests...

not sure if it is true or not, but they are cheap and they look nice, so I plant them...
