I will go ahead and assume that you've been told that as well, and have not confirmed that either.

How far?

100 & 125 Yrds. With the sweet 17 scope if you know the yardage i'd shoot it out to 300 yrds. The wind is the biggest issue i see with the bullet but that's with any gun IMO

Uh, yea. I had a buddy that did that. But he moved to Uganda or France or something.

I was talking about the scope. It's good enough for me, but I'm sure you could step it up a notch.

The statement was,

won't go down on the spot
Deer often don't go down on the spot with a 150 grain bullet, so it is not surprising at all that a yote won't go down on the spot after being hit with a 17 grain bullet.

Where does one aim at a yote with the .17?

I have a 17hmr,17mach2, and the 204.
Will any of them kill a deer, yote or squirrel? Yes
Would i take the 17s deer or yote hunting? No
If i was squirrel hunting with my 17s would i shoot a yote? Yes and it would do the job.

Bottom line there is a ton of different guns, its all about preferance. I would take my 204 to shoot a coyote anyday. And take my 17 mach 2 over my 17hmr squirrel hunting. So do i NEED a 17hmr? No! But damit i got one and its fun as hell to shoot! Get you the hmr! You will have a blast shooting it! Can never have enough guns

FieldandStream has it right:

Yes, a 17 HMR will kill a coyote, but if you want it to drop on the spot w/ a 17 HMR, it had better be pretty close range or a head shot.

I've got a 17 Mach 2. It's a much better squirrel hunting round than the 17 HMR as the latter causes too much damage. OTOH, a poster here has previously said he limits damage using a FMJ bullet in the 17 HMR; I've not had a chance to try that, yet.

I just got back from a ground squirrel hunting trip. The 17 M2 did well, killing it's fair share of squirrels, but the 17 HMR's (3) on the trip were better guns as they were more destructive (nonedible squirrels) and flatter shooting.

22 Hornet is a more versatile gun than the 11 HMR, but many Hornets are not very accurate. Hornet ammo is also much more expensive than the HMR. If you handload, you can make the Hornet do everything the HMR does and more.

AlxTgr,

The HMR seems like the answer to a question no one asked. I wish the Mach 2 would have survived.

Don't start writing the Mach 2's obituary as it's not dead yet. Rounds still available from Hornady, CCI, Federal, Winchester and Eley. Certainly, there are a lot more HMR's sold than M2's.

One of these days I'll get off my butt and actually buy one of the semi-autos that come up for sale.

You'd be better off w/ a bolt or lever action M2. I think there are only 2 gun manufacturers who still make semi-auto Mach 2's, Volquartsen and Magnum Research (VERY expensive). There were safety issues using the usual 22 LR receiver for the higher pressure Mach 2. There was a time when you could buy kits to convert the Ruger 10/22 from 22 LR to 17 Mach 2, but I think these have been discontinued, as well. In fact, the 17M2 ammo has a warning on the box to not use it in guns converted to M2. My M2 is a really fun gun to shoot and scarey accurate.

Not many makers of the M2. Of the non-custom manufacturers, I think it just Savage and Anschutz (both are bolt actions) and Henry (lever). If you buy a M2, you'll enjoy it. :-)

I understand, but if I can't have a semi, then I just don't really want one. I have seen a Thompson come up on gunbroker.
