Ok gents I saw this little beauty (Savage 93R17 BSEV) while taking a look at the new Ruger Takedown last Saturday and fell in love. Here's the problem: I already own a "varmint" rig (Ruger .22 Hornet Stainless/Laminate stock). I've done some ballistic research and it looks like the .17 is faster but not as lethal as my Hornet. Any thoughts (good or bad) on the .17 HMR caliber as far as varminting goes?

I've got the very .17 that you speak of. I can circumsize a gnat at 120 steps with that sumbitch. Best shooting gun I own.

How deadly is it on a coyote? For varminting I'd assume you'd want something with a little more arse and range, like a 22-250, 204, 223, etc.

Vital info here. A guy I work with has a .17 HMR and he swears that any coyote he shoots won't go down on the spot.... he's also claiming good clean shots.

The HMR seems like the answer to a question no one asked. I wish the Mach 2 would have survived.

What kind of glass did you put on it? I'm looking at a used VX-II 3X9X40 on eBay.

Hence my reluctance. It's also available in .22 WMR.

.
I wouldn't go as far as circumsizing gnats but squirrels head shots at 50-100 yards i'll put it against any gun

How far?

Don't they tap out at about 100 yards though?

When I build my varmint rifle, I want something with a little more range.

It will kill yotes just fine. It will also cause instanteous death to a nanny via the ear canal. I've heard tell that you can kill neck banded geese upwards to 200 yards with it too. But I can neither confirm nor deny this. It is a well rounded, flat shooting sumbitch. But if I was going to target strictly yotes, I'd bring my .223. Bought the .17 as a combo package and it came with a 3x9 Nikon scope. It's adequate enough I reckon.
