Neauxla, I have 5 or 6 used telephone poles I'd like to get rid of near Springfield. Might each be 25 or 30' long.

I would be very cautious of using creosote wood. I’ve heard of people having immediate respiratory issues after cutting on them. Serious issues. Creosote is some nasty stuff
I must be extremely lucky to be alive considering the number of fences I built in my younger years with creosote posts and planks, and without a biohazard suit and respirator.

Well smart guy, I didnt mention anything about dying. I’m just repeating what I’ve heard in hopes that it might save this guy some problems. There are two people in this thread alone that have said they’ve had skin issues after using this stuff. Are you implying that this stuff is perfectly harmless and that using caution in regards to skin and respiratory protection is unnecessary?

I’m saying that it’s not going to kill or permanently harm you to pick up some creosote railroad ties or cut them. Wear leather gloves. Mainly for splinters.

Gloves, long sleeves...and GLASSES.
Get some creosote dust in your eyes...and you'll never forget it!

The RR don't play around, and the tracks fall under Homeland Security. They can make your life very miserable if they catch you taking things.

You would be better off to get someone to mill you some crap pine rather than let that creosote leach into your garden.

That is definitely not close to him if he lives in new orleans. Plus we have a stock pile of railroad stuff on some land we own which has a crossing on it and supposedly they have cameras that watches the crossing and can see that stuff so i wouldnt risk trying to take a few and getting caught

What is wrong with landscape timbers? Round on the sides and flat on the top and bottom plus they are stupid cheap

If they are halfway decent the railroad reuses them. Dont be stupid and end up a thief. Just go buy some. They arent much and will be in better condition most likely.
Solid advice, according to my uncle who worked for the railroad, those used ties piled up go to a contractor. He could not get me any, and he strongly advised against helping myself to piles next to the railroad.
100% correct. RR's contract out the removal of scrap track material, then the contract company resells it.
Taking ties from track side is theft. Same goes for scrap metal.

My grandparents lived in a small town were there was a creosote plant that dipped the ties, fence post, and utility poles, had been there since the 1950s, during the late 70s the town's residents finally noticed that most of the people that had lived within a few miles of the plant had died of cancer. Most of them had their own water wells so they suspected grown water contamination.
