OK, if it matters:
2015 Sierra (I'm very happy with it)
2016 Lacrosse (wife is very happy with it...no pics)

When updating your maps on your vehicle nav system, do you guys just go to the dealer/manufacturer or is there another source that you buy your updates from?

TIA

I don't use the GPS in my truck; use Google Maps on my phone.

So, I'm not paying to upgrade the maps in my truck.

For some you go download it at the dealership, and for others, it's a DVD that you get at the dealership.

They sell the DVDs on eBay and Amazon sometimes, but idk if I'd trust those

I asked a the service dept about this a while back. She told me that I could do it myself for cheaper than them. Something about loading the map onto a usb flash drive and uploading it to the truck. You still had to pay for it, but it was cheaper. I don’t know if this is true or not, I never could figure out how to do it.

That's why I'm coming here; pretty sure someone bought a shitty one and someone else got a good one.

I'm not sure I can upload anything with a flash drive. I looked into downloading a screen saver but the verdict was no dice.

GM sent me an email about updating mine for like 179

I laughed as I threw that in the trash

I don’t use my nav system much at all. I mainly like the large touchscreen which you can usually get now without actual nav.

You should have a USB outlet/plug/not sure of the term that will allow you to do this?

My truck is a Ford and much older than yours, but has this capability.

Good luck.

My friend has a Ford and he was able to download a screensaver like you said but when looking into mine, the verdict was I may be able to find someone that can hack into it and do it but other than that no dice.

My wife got something in the mail yesterday from Buick for $140, was just curious if there was something legit for less money bc we all know the prices from dealer or manufacturer are the highest out there.

Gotta ask yourself....Is that really something you wanna cut corners on and risk bricking your head unit?

When will these auto manufacturers figure this shite out and just start integrating tablets into the dash instead of their shite nav/audio systems. That way we can have the shite auto update over the internet for free constantly. I wish truck manuf would jump on the Tesla route for their digital systems.

I absolutely agree but let's say company A makes these updates and sells them to the auto manufacturer who we'll refer to as company B. You gotta believe company A sells these update to more than just company B so if they sell direct for half the money, that's what I'm looking for.

That’s sort of what tjey have going with CarPlay/Android Auto. Now that I have it, I won’t buy another vehicle without it.

I agree. The lack of integration sometimes is mind-boggling. For example, when we go into or out of DST, I have to manually change the clock in the car. It has a GPS. Why can't it adjust the clock automatically?

To the OP, definitely install your own maps. The dealership wanted I think $400 to do mine. I looked around online and bought updated maps for $60.

This! My wife's car has Apple Car Play and I'll never buy another vehicle without that or Andriod Auto. Car Play has a really easy interface and using maps couldn't be easier.

I can get an update from GM for $140 a vehicle; if that's what I have to pay then so be it but thought I would see if anyone had other experiences that were cheaper and just as good
