COLBERT CO., Ala. (WAFF) - The body of the second man killed in a boating accident on the Tennessee River has been recovered.

Colbert County Sheriff Eric Balentine says the two men were killed when their boat and a barge collided around 9:15 p.m. on Saturday.

Officials identified the deceased as 63-year-old William Michael Sandlin and 66-year-old Edison Kim Wallace.

At the time of the accident, only one of the men was found dead near the boat. After a day’s search, the second man was found in a slough near the site of the accident.

Sheriff Balentine says a witness saw the two boats hit and immediately called 911. That same witness then got to the boat before first responders did and found what was left of the vessel.

He says crews actively searched until 3:30 a.m. on Sunday before resuming the search again five hours later. The search was from Riverfront Park in Sheffield to near McFarland Park and Florence Harbor - the same area where a man drowned a few weeks ago.

I went up there in April. Fishing was unbelievable. Did the best right there by that riverside park. The tug lane comes down in front of McFarland, we never once actually saw a tug, they all stayed up the inlet. Possible the tug was coming west into them and not expected. Running the atchafayala river, you get used to watching for them. No telling. Sad deal.

You think mid-sixties is “old men”?

This is hearsay, but they ran into the barge at 60 mph. Hypothesis is they lost the lights of the barge in the lights from shore.

Slick Johnson, douchebag extraordinaire, posted a tiktok video yesterday saying he was friends with them and they didn’t run fast, only in the 60s.

And that is the main reason why bass boats keep running into things. They consider 60 mph slow.

I went to church with the Sandlin family years ago in Decatur. I have been trying to gather information of what had happen and not speculation. Mike had grown up on the river and had fished it for years as did his friend that also died. Very experienced and can only say that bad things happen to good people and I can pray that may Grace be sufficient at this time!

This is a big issue navigating at night these days. Get close to Grand Isle in the dark without radar and you're asking to wreck. You can't see shite for all the nuclear bright dock lights everywhere.

Doesn’t have to be dark, 37 yo from Pearland drive into a barge on Sabine last month. Left a wife and two young children behind.
Speed and complacency will eventually catch up to you if you roll those dice enough times.
I had one with no lights infront of me yesterday on the channel. I had to find his wake to move over and pass him.

My 84 year old dad would kick your arse for saying this.

He still goes duck hunting on the Missouri River alone from time to time - running the River alone in the dark like he always had.

Man that’s sad. My guess is they didn’t see the bow lights of the barge and just thought they were cutting across the front of the towboat. Not seeing the side of that 300’ barge. If it was a heavy loaded barge it would be low in the water too.

Sounds like the accident on the Falgout canal a few years back in Michael Carrere’s boat. 5 guys killed when the boat hit a barge after dark.

Yeah that was bad they had left the oil man’s and rode right under the rake of a barge tied to the bank.
