Trout spawn in the passes at night/full moon and the eggs float into the estuary. Croaker are bottom feeders (look at their mouth) so the croakers are no where near the floating trout eggs. Plus trout eggs are pretty small so a croaker would have to eat a bunch of trout eggs for a meal

The most compelling argument so far.

hopefully the tide takes them to an estuary where thay will mature. Some will mature around reefs and platforms, but they fare better in the marsh/estuary where they can hide from predators.

This.

Trout eat croakers because they are readily available and fricking delicious. No other reason.

biggest specks I've ever caught have been on live croakers. I love em!

Sometimes I get tired of eating Shrimp, and I'll eat a steak. I see that with other species throughout the year, that they will switch to other sources preferably. Heck, it could explain why I have so many different rods/rigs on my boat, too....

Every trout I've ever caught looked like he was hurting.
