Trout rig for a 10-year-old boy.

I'm looking for a good trout setup for a 10-year-old boy. Spinning reel and rod. Doesn't necessarily have to be a combo, but that would work. Want to get something nice, but don't want to break the bank. Looking at the Penn Battle II. Something he could keep for a while. Also looking at the Penn Battle II combo with Penn rod. To get a 6'6" rod with the combo, you have to buy a 2000 reel. I'd prefer the 2500, but that comes with a 7' rod. That might be a bit much for a 10-year-old. Any input would be appreciated.

I’d get him an all star or castaway today with whatever the $60-70 Shimano spinning reel is now. It’ll be something he can have for a while. If he breaks the rod tip just go exchange it at academy

I think if you go to cabelas/bass pro you can get the combo with the 6'6 with the 2500.
those are great rod/reel combos would definitively recommend for the price

My 9 yo fishes with the battle II. He fishes with that because thats what is in the boat. Buy whatever you use also that way you and he are familiar with feel of the rig if he swaps or wants to use a different bait. We keep about 8 poles rigged at all times in the boat so its easier to have multiple of the same type.

I have one of those Battle II combos and it's a solid rig. My only thing, with it being for a kid, it's a bit heavier than some of my similar setups. May not be a big deal, but something for thought.

My 8 and 10 yo are using an ugly stick 6.5’ and cheaper Shimano I reels I bought separate. Only difference is I got the 8 yo a 1000 because he’s smaller but I might go bigger because we are close to maxing line on long casts when I throw for him occasionally.
10 yo is independent but I still put on bait for the other and let him use my rod while I’m taking care of that and he does fine.

Man my Uncle loves his Walmart rig he bought. It's a Shimano Sienna reel on a Sea Tech rod (Ikr?). I think it costs him less than 50 bucks for the whole thing. He and I trout fish a lot and I've saw him give it hell trip after trip after trip and he's never had a problem with it.
I even threw it one afternoon for a while and was surprised how good it felt. So much so that I'm considering picking up a couple for my arsenal when I bring guests who don't have anything.

Small popping cork ( the kind with no weight in it) split shot about 6 in under and live shrimp
