Anyone got anything great or terrible to say about any of their climbers out there? Looking at new and used ones.

I've used a Summit Viper XD for about 10 years now. It's comfortable, easy to climb with, and not so heavy that you can't carry it a mile if you're motivated. A couple of years ago I bought a used Lone Wolf Hand Climber. I hardly use my Summit anymore unless it's close and I'm rifle hunting. The only real pro that the Summit has over the Lone Wolf is comfort. I feel pretty safe in both of them but I still stay 100% tied off.

Ive hunted out of an Ol Man Multi-Vision climber for 20 plus years. The net seat is very comfortable. Can position it to have a foot rest or gun rest.

anything great
Been using an original API since the mid 90s. Same damn one. If there was something better, I would buy it. There isn't. The chain system is the best way to grab a tree, and the teeth are sharper than anything else ever made.

Have a good friend with one. Wish I would’ve got one when they were still around. Grant it, don’t use mine much anymore

I run a couple Summit Viper’s with added foot rests. I do somewhat sharpen the teeth on them so they bite better.

Api chain links have been found to be unsafe in the past. The internet has metallurgist engineers reports on this chain. Go search.

That's interesting since mine is possibly one of the oldest still in use. Pretty sure I have changed the chains at least once though.

Same here, i quit using climbers for the most part. Have 2 in the shop just collecting dust. Made the switch to lock ons a few years ago and never looked back.

Same here. I had 12 of them and would leave them on my lease for the season and take them down at the end, clean them up and store them until the next season. I'm down to about eight and have mostly transitioned to well-placed 18' ladder stands. But I still use those API's a bunch when I want to get 40' up in a pine stand or clear cut.

Really comfortable, light enough to tote for miles, stable as hell in a tree. An all day stand for me no problem.

I searched but could not find anything but an anecdotal "he said, she said" instance of a failure with an API chain climber. Nothing definitive or factually substantiated about what was the cause. Can you post a link?

There was a recall on the cable version that was taken off the market and was replaced with chains. Could you be referring to this? As far as I am aware, replacement chains are still available to purchase. I think they would have taken these stands off the market if they were as dangerous as you say.

I'm looking. I remember it well. A blowed up magnified pic of the link cracks. Dude was a metallurgist hired by a law firm

same. and I'm not exactly what one would consider to be in great shape these days; it's still easy to use, comfortable, and I've always felt safe in it. I also stay tied off 100% of the time

Seems to refer to the cable version and not the chain version.
