Hello good people of the Outdoor Board,

I am reaching out for recommendations for trail cams, preferably with nighttime optics. My folks have had a string of car break ins in the neighborhood around Austin becoming more and more common as the lawlessness makes its way into the suburbs. I suggested getting a ring doorbell, etc. Figured a trail cam with motion activation might not be a bad thing, could capture suspect, or vehicle or at least alert as needed.

Do you have any recs for a good nighttime type trail cam. It seems they aren't super expensive, budget maybe $100-200

Thoughts?

Not a Trail Cam, But I'd installed Blink outdoor cameras at my house and the camp. There are simple and use Wifi and work on batteries. you can also install the solar panels too. Blink

For what you want, a ring doorbell may be better. Trail cams have limitations and don't shine in your scenario as well as a real security camera.

Yi camera off Amazon for $40. You won't believe the image quality on this thing. I can check things out any time I need from my phone. Night vision and two way audio also, so you can yell at any intruders

I also would recommend a battery powered security system over a trail camera. I have a Eufycam system from amazon. Camera batteries charge in about 4 hours and last at least 6 months. Notifications sent to my phone, 2 way audio, over a month worth of activity gets stored in the home base on a micro sd (so no cloud subscription). Add extra cameras, doorbell cameras, flood light cameras, etc as needed.

App and updates are free, so it's a one-time expenditure

Battery powered Blink cameras. My driveway is 700' long and I have 4 along the driveway and 2 on my porch. They require a wifi signal, so I installed a TP link omnidirectional and a flat panel wifi antenna. I get coverage all the way to the gate at the end of the driveway. I also installed 4 small motion detect LED lights that come on upon detecting movement. If you parents live a neighborhood they may not need the outdoor wifi gear. The thing I like about them is I get an alarm on my phone when the cameras detect motion, thus I know when someone is coming down my driveway.

Just so you are aware, quite a few of the features sit behind a subscription with Blink cameras. The cost isn't outrageous, I think it's around $100 a year. The main disadvantage being that you can not save video without it, unless you buy a $35 Sync Module and use it to store footage on a flash drive.

Check out the TP-Link Tapo camera.

TP-LINK Tapo C325

It has full color night vision. Really impressive image quality.

I'll capture some images tonight and post them.

I pay 15$ a month for my tactacam service.
As others have stated a lot better options for security monitoring other than trail cameras.

My drive length is similar to yours and I was looking at the ubiquiti AC Mesh Professional but unable to find something comparable. What model TP link and flat panel wifi antenna are you using?

Blink cameras are good in daylight, but mine aren’t real good in the dark

Anything without integrated IR is going to be shite in the dark. They all advertise enhanced nightvision this and that, but without the words "integrated IR" in the spec sheet it's going to give you shitty footage and frick up the motion activation constantly and clog up your cloud storage very quickly under dark conditions.

Can these be set to only work during a specified time? I don't want it going off every time we walk around outside.

Yes - It has Detection and Alerts settings that you can set up - and those can be on a schedule. So your motion alerts will only trigger say Midnight to 6:00 AM.

Here's some pics I captured last night. You can see the exact time in the photos.

There is no lighting coming from my side. This is only ambient lighting. (there is a blue pool light that was left on a chair)

I took one about 5PM, one at 8 PM, and one past 11 PM.

And this is with the camera's spotlight turned ON.
